Chapter 8 - The Legacy of Richard Vance

The afternoon sun cast long, amber shadows across the polished hardwood floors of the study at number 42. Kayla sat at the mahogany desk, surrounded by stacks of old photographs, legal deeds, and handwritten journals left behind by Richard.

For years, the world had remembered Richard Vance as a ruthless syndicate boss, a shadow ruler who controlled the docks, the banks, and the political machinery of the entire seaboard. But as Kayla turned the pages of his private journals, a very different picture emerged—one filled with quiet compromises, protective instincts, and a deep, abiding love for the fragile peace they had fought so hard to carve out of a violent world.

A soft knock sounded at the door, and Wilton stepped inside, holding a silver tray with a fresh pot of tea and a small plate of shortbread cookies.

"You've been in here all day, Boss," Wilton said gently, setting the tray down on the desk. "The foundation audit for the district is complete. Every scholarship fund, every community clinic, and every small business grant we set up is fully funded for the next fifty years."

Kayla closed the journal she was reading, her fingers lingering on the leather spine. "Richard always worried that once he was gone, everything he built would crumble into chaos, Wilton. He thought power could only be maintained through fear."

"He was wrong," Wilton replied softly. "Fear only buys temporary obedience, Boss. What you've built here on Ashgrove Street... and across the entire district... that's respect. That's permanence."

Kayla smiled, a genuine, radiant expression that reached all the way to her eyes—the kind of smile she hadn't allowed herself to show in the ten long years since Richard passed away.

"He would have loved what we did to number 40," she murmured, looking out the window toward the sunlit lawn next door where children were laughing. "He always hated bad landscaping."

Wilton chuckled, adjusting his cuffs. "Shall I prepare the car for your evening walk with Milo, Boss? The autumn air is crisp, and the neighborhood is entirely at peace."

Kayla stood up, smoothing the front of her dark wool cardigan. "Yes, Wilton. Let's go for a walk."
