Chapter 8 - The Waiting Game

Six months passed.

The Italian coastline was breathtakingly beautiful. The villa sat high on a cliff overlooking the azure waters of the Mediterranean Sea, surrounded by olive groves and blooming bougainvillea. It was a paradise, a far cry from the cramped apartment or the fortified mansion Josie had known.

Under Josie’s care, the boys thrived. Theo had completely transformed; his cheeks were rosy, he laughed constantly, and he had become a protective, loving older brother figure to Eli. Eli, meanwhile, was as vibrant as ever, spending his days chasing lizards in the villa's sunlit gardens and swimming in the pool.

Yet, despite the peace, Josie’s heart remained across the Atlantic.

Damon called every single night without fail. Through the encrypted video screens, Josie watched as he systematically disassembled his illegal underworld empire, leveraging his vast wealth to transition all his businesses into legitimate, legal global enterprises. It was a brutal, complex process that required him to dismantle decades of mob connections, face down federal audits, and eliminate every lingering threat to his family’s future.

"It's almost over, Josie," Damon said one evening through the screen. He looked tired, sitting in his office in New York, but his eyes burned with intense devotion. "The final legal restructuring clears tomorrow. The Sterling name is clean. I am no longer a mafia boss. I am just a man who wants to come home to his family."

"We miss you so much, Damon," Josie whispered, pressing her fingers against the glass of the screen. "The boys ask about you every day."

"Tell them I’m packing my bags," Damon smiled softly. "I'll see you in two days, my love."

The next morning, Josie was in the kitchen of the villa, chopping fresh fruit for breakfast, while the boys played on the vast marble terrace outside. The sun was bright, the sea breeze carrying the sweet scent of summer.

Suddenly, she heard the distant, thumping sound of helicopter blades echoing over the cliffside.

Josie dropped her knife, her heart suddenly pounding against her ribs. She hurried out onto the terrace. Eli and Theo were already standing near the balustrade, shielding their eyes as they looked up at the sky.

A sleek black helicopter descended onto the villa's private helipad located on the lawn below. The rotors slowly whirred to a stop, the noise dying down into the gentle rustle of wind through the olive trees.

The door of the helicopter slid open.

A tall man stepped out onto the grass. He wasn't wearing a dark tactical shirt, nor was he wearing a holster. He was dressed in a tailored navy suit, looking every bit the noble, powerful gentleman. He looked up toward the terrace.

"DAD!" Theo screamed at the top of his lungs.

Theo broke into a full sprint, taking the terrace steps three at a time. Eli let out a joyous squeal and chased right after him, his tiny sneakers flying across the stone pathway.

Josie stood at the top of the stairs, her breath caught in her throat, tears instantly blinding her vision.

Damon dropped to his knees on the grass, opening his broad arms. Theo launched himself into his father's chest, sobbing tears of pure joy. A second later, Eli collided with them, wrapping his arms around Damon's neck. Damon held both boys tightly, pressing his face into their hair, his own eyes shining with uncharacteristic tears.

"I missed you, Dad!" Theo cried.

"Did you bring Barnaby back?" Eli asked loudly, pulling back to look at him.

May you like

Damon laughed—a deep, rich sound that echoed across the Italian coast. "Barnaby stayed in New York to guard the new house, Eli. But I brought something better."

Damon stood up, stepping around the boys. His gray eyes locked onto Josie, who was slowly walking down the stone steps, her heart overflowing with love.
