Chapter 7 - Standing Against the Shadow

Josie held her breath, her knuckles white around the steel pipe.

The tall figure stepped into the bunker light. His black tactical shirt was torn, stained with soot and blood, and his face was covered in grime—but his gray eyes were bright, clear, and intensely alive.

"Damon!" Josie cried out.

She dropped the pipe, the heavy metal clattering onto the floor, and threw herself into his arms. Damon caught her, lifting her off her feet, burying his face in her hair as he wrapped his powerful arms around her. He smelled of gunpowder and rain, but to Josie, it was the sweet scent of life itself.

"I told you I'd come back," Damon murmured against her neck, his voice rough.

"Are you hurt?" she sobbed, pulling back to inspect his face, tears streaming down her cheeks.

"It's not my blood," Damon replied grimly. He looked over her shoulder at the two boys who were watching from the corner.

Theo let out a yell of relief and ran toward his father. Damon dropped to one knee, catching Theo in a tight embrace, kissing his head repeatedly. Eli walked over slowly, his amber eyes wide.

Damon reached into his vest pocket, pulled out the green plastic dinosaur, completely unblemished, and handed it back to the five-year-old.

"Barnaby did his job," Damon said with a faint, rare smile. "He guarded my heart."

Eli took the toy and smiled brightly. "I told you he was brave."

Foster stepped forward, wiping sweat from his brow. "Boss... what about Vance?"

Damon's smile faded, replaced by the grim reality of his position. "Vance is dead. His men surrendered or fled when he fell. The estate is secure, but the police and federal authorities will be here within twenty minutes. The gunfire was too loud to keep quiet."

Josie's heart sank. "The police? Damon... will they arrest you?"

Damon stood up, taking Josie's hand in his. "It was self-defense on private property, but it's going to be complicated. My legal team is already on their way. But this place isn't safe for you and the boys right now. I'm sending you all to my private villa in coastal Italy tonight."

"No," Josie said firmly, shaking her head. "I'm not leaving you."

"Josie, listen to me," Damon urged softly, holding her face in his hands. "The media will swarm this place. My enemies will try to see if I am weak. I need to know that you, Theo, and Eli are safe across the ocean while I clean up this mess. Once the dust settles and my empire is completely secure, I will come for you. I promise."

Josie looked into his gray eyes and saw no deceit—only pure, unadulterated love and protection. "You swear you'll come?"

"On my life," Damon vowed, pressing his lips firmly against hers in a passionate, deep kiss that made her world tilt.

Three hours later, under the cover of pre-dawn darkness, a private jet took off from a private airfield. Inside, Josie sat with Eli and Theo fast asleep in her lap. She looked out the window at the receding lights of the city, her hand clutching a silver signet ring that Damon had slipped onto her finger before she boarded.

For the first time in her life, she wasn't running away out of fear. She was waiting for the man she loved to rebuild their world.
