Chapter 9 - Sins of the Father, Redemption of the Son

By the time winter arrived, covering Harrow Falls in a thick blanket of white snow, Damian had become a fixture in Eli’s life. He attended every soccer game, standing along the sidelines in his heavy coat, cheering quietly but fiercely whenever Eli touched the ball. Eli began to look for him in the crowds, a subtle nod exchanged between father and son before each match.

However, the past has a way of casting long shadows.

In late January, a dark sedan with Illinois plates pulled into the driveway of the inn where Damian was staying. Damian, returning from a walk to the grocery store, recognized the car instantly. It belonged to Dominic Vance, a rival faction leader from Chicago who had tried to seize control after Damian’s sudden departure.

Damian walked calmly up to the vehicle as the window rolled down. Dominic looked out at him, a cruel smirk on his face.

“So it’s true,” Dominic said. “The great Damian Moretti turned into a suburban housewife. We heard you found the kid. Thought maybe you were getting soft.”

Damian’s eyes turned to ice. The warmth he had cultivated over the past few months vanished, replaced by the lethal aura that had kept him alive for decades. He leaned down, his voice a low, terrifying vibration that made Dominic’s smile falter.

“Listen to me very carefully, Dominic,” Damian said. “I left Chicago because I chose to. The organization is run by men who answer to me if I call. If you, or anyone else from the city, so much as drives through this zip code again, I won't just kill you. I will systematically destroy everyone who carries your name. I am a father now. And a father has a lot more to lose than a boss.”

Dominic stared at Damian, seeing the absolute certainty in his eyes. He realized that Damian hadn't grown soft; he had become infinitely more dangerous because he finally had something worth protecting.

“We have no business here,” Dominic said, rolling up the window. The car reversed out of the driveway and sped away, leaving Harrow Falls for good.

Damian stood in the snow, taking a deep breath. He looked down at his hands. They were clean. He hadn't pulled a trigger. He had protected his family with the weight of his past, but he was no longer bound by it. He turned and walked toward Caldwell Street, ready to go home.
