Chapter 3 - The Fractured Truth

Nine years had passed since the morning Damian walked out of Harborview Medical Center. Eli was now nine, a brilliant, fiercely independent boy who excelled in school and possessed a quiet maturity that drew people to him. He spent his afternoons at the community center where Isabella worked, often reading advanced books or drawing intricate sketches of architecture.
In Chicago, the cracks in Damian’s carefully constructed reality finally gave way.
It began with a routine audit of the Moretti organization's older secure archives. A young digital forensics specialist, newly hired to upgrade the syndicate's cyber security, stumbled upon a heavily encrypted, hidden partition within a server that had belonged to Victor Salazar nine years ago.
The specialist, terrified of what he found, did not take it to Victor. He took it directly to Damian.
Damian sat at his desk, the lights dimmed, watching the computer screen. The specialist stood trembling in the corner. On the monitor was the original, unedited footage of the photographs Victor had used to damn Isabella.
Damian watched as the software stripped away the digital manipulation. The man in the photos wasn't an anonymous lover; it was an actor, hired and paid through a shell company controlled by Victor. The time stamps had been altered. The text messages had been spoofed from an external server.
But the final blow was a sealed PDF document: the second DNA test from nine years ago. The one that had disappeared into the legal abyss.
Damian clicked the file. His fingers, usually steady enough to hold a firearm without a tremor, shook violently.
LABORATORY DETERMINATION OF PATERNITY ALLEGED FATHER: Damian Moretti CHILD: Eli Hayes PROBABILITY OF PATERNITY: 99.99%
The room seemed to lose all oxygen. The words burned into Damian’s retinas.
Ninety-nine point ninety-nine percent.
Eli was his. He had always been his.
Nine years of his son's life, gone. Nine years of Isabella's suffering, caused by his own hands, his own pride, his own blind trust in a viper.
A primal, suffocating rage erupted within Damian’s chest, followed immediately by a crushing, agonizing grief that tore the breath from his lungs. He closed his eyes, and a single, heavy tear escaped, tracking down his hardened cheek. He remembered the hospital room. He remembered the small, perfect mouth of his son, and the calm, devastating promise Isabella had made: “When the result proves Eli is your son, you will not come back here expecting tears, forgiveness, or a second chance.”
“Sir?” the specialist whispered, terrified.
“Leave,” Damian commanded, his voice a low, terrifying growl. “And do not breathe a word of this to anyone.”

As the door clicked shut, Damian stood up. The sorrow vanished, replaced entirely by a lethal, razor-sharp focus. The man he had trusted above all others had stolen his family.
It was time for a reckoning.
