Chapter 6 - The Ghost in the Rain

Isabella was setting the laundry basket down on the porch table when she felt a sudden, familiar chill. It was an instinct developed from years of living in the shadow of danger, a sixth sense that told her she was being watched.

She turned around, shielding her eyes against the late afternoon sun.

A man was walking slowly up the sidewalk toward her gate. He wore a heavy black overcoat. His posture was perfectly erect, his movements deliberate and powerful. As he stepped into the shadow of the maple tree, the sun caught his face.

The laundry basket slipped from Isabella’s hands, tumbling onto the porch. Socks and towels scattered across the wood planks.

“Isabella,” Damian said, stopping at the edge of the lawn.

Her breath caught in her throat. The world seemed to stop spinning. The quiet peace of Harrow Falls shattered instantly, replaced by the terrifying specter of her past.

“Mom? What’s wrong?” Eli’s voice called out from the side yard. He walked around the corner, holding his soccer ball, his eyes instantly tracking the stranger standing by their gate.

Isabella immediately stepped between Damian and her son, her maternal instincts kicking in with ferocious intensity. “Eli, go inside. Right now.”

“But Mom, who is—”

“Inside, Eli! Lock the back door,” she commanded, her voice sharp and unyielding.

Eli looked at the man, then at his mother’s pale face. Sensing the gravity of the situation, he nodded, darting into the house and slamming the door behind him.

Damian took a step forward, his hands raised slightly in a gesture of peace. “Isabella, please. I’m not here to hurt you. I’m not here to take him.”

“Get off my property, Damian,” Isabella hissed, her body trembling with a mixture of terror and white-hot fury. “I told you nine years ago. I warned you. You chose your empire. You chose Victor. You threw us away like garbage!”

“Victor is dead,” Damian said quietly. “I killed him.”

Isabella froze.

“He lied to me, Isabella. He fabricated everything. The photos, the messages... he hid the second DNA test,” Damian’s voice cracked, the hardened exterior of the Chicago mafia boss completely fracturing before her. “I found the truth. I found the real test. Eli is my son. I know it now. I’ve known it every day in my nightmares, but I have the proof.”

Isabella let out a harsh, bitter laugh, tears finally spilling over her lashes. “Oh, you know it now? Now that it’s convenient? Now that nine years have passed? You broke me, Damian. You left me in that hospital room with twenty-three dollars and a broken heart. You don’t get to show up now and expect a confession of regret to fix this!”
