Chapter 4 - The Vanguard Office and the Gathering Storm

Down in downtown Manhattan, snow fell heavily against the frosted glass windows of Vanguard Finance. The office was a sterile, fluorescent-lit labyrinth of cubicles and heavy mahogany doors, masquerading as a legitimate debt-consolidation firm. In reality, it was a money-laundering hub for Salvatore Baron’s operation.
The front glass door chimed as the bell rang.
Two men walked in. The receptionist, a bored young woman chewing gum behind a high counter, didn't even look up until the heavy thud of leather boots stopped right in front of her.
She looked up. Her gum stopped moving.
Standing before her was Lorenzo Duca. His black overcoat was unbuttoned, revealing a tailored charcoal suit and the unmistakable aura of absolute, unyielding authority. Flanking him on either side were four armed enforcers in identical black coats, their faces like carved stone.
“I’m here to see Vincent Rossi,” Lorenzo said, his voice slicing through the quiet office like a razor.
“A-Appoinments are required, Mr. Duca,” the receptionist stammered, her fingers trembling as they hovered over her desk phone. “Mr. Rossi is currently in a meeting—”
Lorenzo didn’t wait for permission. He stepped past the counter, his boot heels clicking rhythmically against the linoleum floor. Marco Rinaldi followed close behind, holding a thick manila folder under his arm.
With a single kick, Lorenzo sent the oak door of the inner office flying inward. The brass lock splintered, crashing against the interior drywall.
Inside, Vincent Rossi—a corpulent man with slicked-back gray hair and an expensive gold watch—jumped up from his leather desk chair, nearly knocking over his coffee mug. Two of his armed guards scrambled for their shoulder holsters, but before their hands could even brush leather, Marco and the Duca enforcers had them covered with precision-aimed automatic pistols.
“Mr. Duca!” Rossi gasped, forcing an oily, nervous smile onto his face as he wiped sweat from his forehead. “To what do we owe the unexpected honor? If this is about the eastern port shipping logistics, I assure you, Salvatore and you have an understanding—”
“This isn't about shipping, Vincent,” Lorenzo cut him off, walking slowly toward the desk. He placed both palms on the polished mahogany and leaned in, his dark eyes boring straight into Rossi’s soul. “This is about a ledger. A ledger containing Grace Carter’s debt.”
Rossi blinked, trying to mask his panic. “Ah. The cleaning woman. Look, Mr. Duca, business is business. She signed the contract. High-risk loans carry high interest. It’s completely legal—”
“Legal?” Lorenzo’s lips parted in a cold, humorless smile. He straightened up and motioned to Marco.
Marco stepped forward and tossed the thick manila folder onto the desk right in front of Rossi. Papers spilled out, revealing wire transfer records, shell corporation registrations linking Vanguard Finance directly to Salvatore Baron, and—most importantly—the original medical records showing that Grace’s mother’s debt had been artificially inflated by 400% through fraudulent billing codes generated by a clinic owned by Baron’s cousin.
“You didn't just buy a debt, Vincent,” Lorenzo said softly, walking around the desk until he stood towering over the trembling man. “You manufactured an anchor to shackle an innocent woman to a sinking ship. And worse... you placed her inside my estate.”
“I swear to God, I didn't know she was connected to you!” Rossi blurted out, raising his hands in surrender as he backed up against the bookshelves. “Baron just told us to target local service workers with dependents, squeeze them until they broke, and report anyone who showed signs of cracking under pressure! We didn't know she worked for you!”
Lorenzo stopped pacing. He turned his head slightly, his gaze locking onto Rossi with terrifying intensity.
“Target workers with dependents?” Lorenzo repeated, the words tasting like poison in his mouth. “Why?”
Rossi swallowed hard, knowing that withholding information now meant a quick death on the cold pavement outside. “To build leverage against high-ranking officials and estate staff! Baron wants inside the Duca perimeter. He thinks someone inside your house is leaking security rotations. He needed weak links to plant devices.”

Marco, standing near the door, felt a sudden chill wash over him. He reached inside his coat pocket, feeling the cold metal of the locket and the forensic report Emma had pulled from the hidden drawer.
The puzzle pieces were snapping together with terrifying clarity. It wasn't just about financial extortion. It was an inside job. And the traitor wasn't a maid or a guard—it was someone close enough to plant forged evidence inside Lorenzo’s private desk.
