Chapter 3 - The Broken Rabbit and the Hidden Ledger

While Lorenzo and Marco prepared to dismantle the financial trap ensnaring Grace, back in the forbidden wing, Emma stirred.

The sunlight had shifted, now illuminating a small antique desk near the window. Emma rubbed her eyes with the back of her oversized sleeve and sat up. The bed was massive, swallowing her small frame, but she felt safe here. The man with the black gloves—the giant who carried her like she weighed nothing—had felt warm.

She slid off the edge of the mattress, her bare feet padding softly against the thick wool rug. Clutching her gray stuffed rabbit, she explored the room. There were tall bookshelves filled with leather-bound volumes she couldn't read, and a large mahogany desk with silver pens.

Near the corner of the desk, something caught her eye. Protruding from beneath a stack of old architectural blueprints was a corner of a torn photograph.

Emma crawled under the low edge of the desk, pulling herself forward on her knees. She tugged at the photograph. It was stuck, wedged inside a shallow sliding drawer that hadn’t been fully latched. With a firm little yank, the drawer popped open, spilling its contents across the floor.

Documents, newspaper clippings, and a heavy black leather-bound ledger tumbled out.

Emma didn't care about the papers. Her eyes were fixed on what had been wedged inside the drawer's handle: a small, torn piece of gray faux-fur, identical to the fabric of her own rabbit. Attached to it was a silver chain with a small, engraved locket.

She picked up the locket and the scrap of fur. As she pulled the locket open with her fingernail, a tiny photograph inside revealed a little girl with bright, laughing eyes and a smiling woman standing beside a man who looked remarkably like Lorenzo—only younger, without the hard lines of grief etched into his face.

Suddenly, the heavy oak door of the room clicked open.

Emma froze, dropping the locket back toward the floor just as Marco Rinaldi stepped inside.

Marco stopped dead in his tracks. His eyes darted from the spilled drawer on the floor to the little girl sitting amidst Lorenzo’s most private, forbidden archives. For a fraction of a second, Marco’s composure completely shattered. The color drained from his face.

“Emma,” Marco breathed, stepping forward quickly, his hands held up in a placating gesture. “Hey, sweetie. You shouldn’t be in here. The Boss—Lorenzo—he doesn't like anyone touching these things.”

Emma looked up at Marco, her lower lip trembling slightly, not out of fear of Marco, but because she felt she had done something wrong. She held up the gray scrap of fur and the silver locket.

“I found it,” she whispered. “It looks like Mr. Rabbit’s ear.”

Marco knelt down slowly on one knee, his chest tightening. He recognized the locket instantly. It belonged to Lily—the very locket Lorenzo had searched for three years ago after the car bomb, the one the recovery teams had never found in the wreckage.

How had it ended up locked in Lorenzo’s private desk drawer? And more importantly, how was a piece of synthetic rabbit fur—matching Emma’s toy—wedged inside the mechanism with it?

Marco gently took the locket from Emma’s small palm. As he did, a folded document slipped out from the bottom of the spilled stack. It wasn't an architectural blueprint. It was a certified forensic report from a private investigator, dated six months after the bombing.

Marco’s eyes scanned the first two lines, and his breath caught in his throat.

“Subject: Vehicle tampering analysis. Brake line severed prior to arrival at winter parade route. Secondary explosive device detonated via remote trigger. Ordered by internal syndicate affiliate...”

The name at the bottom of the page was obscured by a dark coffee stain, but the signature above it belonged to someone Marco knew intimately. Someone who was currently sitting downstairs in the estate’s secure dining room, pouring coffee for the guards every morning.

Marco’s heart hammered against his ribs. The debt file holding Grace hostage, the strange coincidence of Emma finding her way to the forbidden wing, the torn rabbit matching a piece left behind in the wreckage three years ago—it wasn't random chance.

It was a trap. And someone inside Lorenzo’s inner circle was pulling the strings.

“Emma,” Marco said, his voice urgent yet gentle as he scooped the child up into his arms, tucking the locket and the paper deep inside his inner pocket. “Let’s go downstairs. Your mom is waiting for you, and I need to show your new friend upstairs a very interesting piece of paper.”
