Chapter 9 - The Dawn of a New Era

The sun rose over the Duca estate the following morning with a brilliance that felt almost miraculous. The heavy gray fog had cleared away, revealing a sparkling blue ocean stretching out endlessly toward the horizon.

In the master kitchen, Mrs. Costa was humming softly while flipping pancakes on a large copper griddle, while Emma sat at the oak table wearing her favorite yellow dress, feeding small pieces of toast to her gray rabbit.

I walked into the kitchen wearing a clean, pressed blouse and a pair of trousers—no longer dressed as a servant, but as someone who finally belonged.

"Mama! Look! Bunny has a new ribbon!" Emma cheered, holding up the stuffed rabbit, which now sported a neat pale blue satin ribbon tied securely around its left ear.

"Did the man with the big hands give that to you?" I asked with a smile, pouring myself a cup of fresh coffee.

"He said Bunny needed to look fancy today because we are going outside to the garden," Emma announced happily, sliding off her chair and running toward the back door as it opened.

Lorenzo stood on the patio, dressed in a lightweight charcoal sweater with his sleeves rolled up, his hands completely bare in the morning sunlight. He was holding a small, vibrant red toy shovel in one hand and a potted yellow daffodil in the other.

Emma rushed straight toward him, grabbing his right hand without a shred of hesitation. Lorenzo looked down at her, a soft, warm expression breaking across his face that no one in the city would have ever believed possible. He let go of the shovel, used his free hand to scoop Emma up onto his shoulder, and walked toward the garden beds with her laughing happily above him.

I stepped out onto the patio, the crisp morning breeze catching my hair, and watched them from the doorway.

Mrs. Costa stepped up beside me, handing me a small white envelope bearing the Duca family crest.

"What is this?" I asked, looking at the older woman.

"An employment contract," Mrs. Costa said with a knowing smile. "Not as a maid. As the estate's new Director of Operations. Master Lorenzo insists that anyone smart enough to spot a traitor and brave enough to walk down to the north gate deserves a proper title."

I opened the envelope. The salary listed inside was more than enough to buy a house of our own, secure Emma's future for the next ten years, and leave the shadows of the past behind forever.

But as I looked back out toward the garden, where Lorenzo was showing Emma how to plant a yellow daffodil in the rich black soil, I realized I didn't want to leave.

The house on the cliff was no longer a cage of secrets and blood.

It was a home.
