Chapter 10 - The Happy Ending

Five years later, the Duca estate looked entirely different.
The heavy iron gates at the perimeter were still secure, and the guards still patrolled the cliffside paths, but the dark, oppressive gloom that used to hang over the property had been replaced by the sound of laughter, music, and children playing on the lawn.
Inside the main sitting room, a roaring fire crackled in the marble hearth, casting a warm, golden glow across the antique bookshelves.
I sat on the velvet sofa, reviewing the quarterly budget reports for the estate's charitable foundation, which now funded three different children's hospitals in the city.
Footsteps echoed softly in the hallway.
An eight-year-old girl with bright eyes and a ponytail burst into the room, holding an old, battered, gray stuffed rabbit with a faded blue ribbon tied proudly around its ear.
"Mama! Can we go down to the stables now? Uncle Marco promised to let me brush the new pony!"
"Did you finish your homework, Emma?" I asked, looking up with a smile as I set my tablet down on the coffee table.
"All done! Math, reading, and art!"
Before I could answer, a pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped gently around my waist from behind, and a warm chin rested softly on my shoulder.
Lorenzo kissed the side of my neck, his hands—completely bare, strong, and entirely unhidden from the world—resting comfortably across my lap.
"Let her go to the stables, Maya," Lorenzo murmured, his voice deep and rich with affection. "The horses are waiting, and so is the sunshine."
Emma giggled, holding the gray rabbit up toward us. "See? Bunny says it's time to play!"
I leaned back against Lorenzo’s chest, feeling the steady, powerful beat of his heart—a heart that had once been locked away behind iron gates and black leather gloves, but now belonged entirely to us.

"All right," I smiled, taking Lorenzo’s hand in mine and intertwining our fingers. "Let's go outside."
And as the three of us walked out into the brilliant afternoon sunshine together, the shadows of the past vanished completely into the light, leaving behind a happily ever after that no storm could ever wash away.
