Chapter 8 - The Unmasking of the Syndicate

Back inside the warm, brightly lit study of the Duca estate, the atmosphere was thick with tension. Marcus sat handcuffed to an iron-framed chair in the center of the room, his face bruised and pale, while Elena and Dr. Bianchi stood trembling near the corner, guarded by two armed security officers.

Emma was still asleep upstairs, tucked safely away behind locked doors guarded by Mrs. Costa.

I stood near the fireplace, holding a cup of hot black coffee that Lorenzo had insisted I drink to stop my shivering.

Lorenzo sat behind his desk, his bare hands resting flat on the mahogany wood. The scars were fully visible now under the harsh desk lamp—a map of every battle he had ever fought to keep his family, his business, and his home from tearing apart.

"Elena," Lorenzo said softly, his voice cutting through the silence like a knife. "Would you like to explain why Marcus was transferring fifty thousand dollars into your brother's bank account this morning?"

Elena burst into tears, dropping to her knees on the Persian rug. "He threatened me! He said if I didn't help him frame the new cleaning girl, he would tell your enforcers that my brother was smuggling drugs through our port!"

"And you, Doctor?" Lorenzo turned his gaze toward Dr. Bianchi. "Did your son in Milan ever receive that legal fee from the Moretti family?"

Dr. Bianchi closed her eyes, her proud posture slumping as the last bit of defiance drained from her body. "They promised to get him out, Lorenzo. I was tired of living in the shadow of your empire. I wanted my family back."

"Family," Lorenzo repeated the word with a bitter, hollow laugh. He stood up slowly, walking around the desk until he stood directly in front of the kneeling doctor. "You traded my family's safety for a lie sold by men who burn everyone who ever trusted them. You are all dismissed."

He looked at the guards. "Take Marcus to the lower warehouse. Hold Elena and the doctor in the East Quarters until dawn. Then put them on a boat to the mainland. They are never to set foot in this city again."

As the guards hauled the weeping conspirators out of the room, the heavy oak doors slammed shut behind them, leaving only Lorenzo and me in the vast, quiet study.

The silence stretched between us, heavy with unspoken words.

I set my coffee cup down on the edge of the desk.

"Thank you," I whispered. "For keeping Emma safe. For... everything."

Lorenzo looked down at his bare hands, flexing his scarred fingers slowly as if getting used to the feeling of freedom after years of hiding.

"You didn't have to come down to the north gate tonight, Maya," he said quietly, his dark eyes finally rising to meet mine. "You could have run. You had the key."

"I told you," I said, stepping a little closer. "I'm not a criminal. And besides... someone had to make sure you didn't get yourself killed out there."

A faint, genuine smile—the first I had ever seen on his face—touched the corners of Lorenzo's mouth.

"You are a very stubborn woman, Maya."

"It runs in the family," I replied, thinking of Emma sleeping upstairs with her worn-out gray rabbit.

Lorenzo stepped closer, closing the distance between us until I could feel the warmth radiating from his chest. He raised his right hand—uncovered, scarred, and entirely real—and gently tucked a stray lock of hair behind my ear.

His touch was surprisingly tender.

"Your debt to the pharmacy is paid," Lorenzo said softly. "Your salary is doubled. And tomorrow, we are going to find a proper nursery school for your daughter so you never have to clean a bloodstained floor in this house again."

I looked up into his eyes, feeling the heavy armor of the Duca estate melt away, leaving something real, warm, and entirely unexpected in its place.
