Chapter 9 - A New Dawn

Two years passed like a gentle, healing breeze.

Dominic did not return to the active mafia life. He officially stepped down as the head of the Moretti family, handing the reins of the restructured, entirely legitimate shipping empire over to Marcus. The weapons, the street wars, and the late-night drop-offs were left in the past. Dominic Moretti was now, officially, a retired businessman and a full-time father.

The penthouse in Chicago was sold. Dominic bought a permanent estate in the rolling hills of Virginia, far away from the shadows of his past life.

The healing process had been long. There were nights when Sophia still woke up from nightmares, crying out in fear, but she no longer hid. She knew that if she cried, two people would instantly run to her room: her father, and Elena.

Elena had transitioned seamlessly into their lives. She was no longer the quiet woman who blended into the wallpaper. She was the heart of the home. She taught Sophia how to bake, helped Lucas with his science projects, and, slowly but surely, healed the deep, rugged wounds in Dominic’s heart.

One summer afternoon, Dominic watched from the patio as Elena chased Lucas and Sophia through a sprinkler on the lawn. The air was filled with the sweet scent of blooming jasmine and the beautiful, chaotic sound of children’s laughter.

Elena ran up to the patio, laughing, her hair damp from the water, her cheeks flushed with life.

Dominic handed her a towel, his eyes locked on hers with a warmth that had grown into something profound and undeniable over the past two years.

“You’re getting wet, Mr. Moretti,” she teased, using her old title for him with a playful wink.

“I don’t mind,” Dominic murmured. He reached out, gently taking her hand. He pulled her close, his heart beating with a steady, peaceful rhythm. “Elena… thank you for bringing life back to this house. And to me.”

Elena looked up at him, her hand tightening around his. “You did that yourself, Dominic. You chose them. You chose to be a father.”

He leaned down, and this time, there was no hesitation. He kissed her—a soft, lingering promise of a future they had both fought so hard to build. From the lawn, Lucas and Sophia cheered and giggled, throwing wet grass into the air.
