Chapter 10 - The Sanctuary on the Hill
Ten years later, the sun set over the Virginia estate, painting the sky in brilliant hues of gold, orange, and deep violet.
A large wooden table was set up on the lawn, decorated with wild flowers and filled with platters of home-cooked food. It was Lucas’s high school graduation celebration.
Lucas, now seventeen, stood tall and confident, wearing a navy blue blazer. He had his father's strong jaw, but his eyes were bright, intelligent, and free of the heavy burdens he had carried as a child. He was heading to Yale in the fall to study law.
Sophia, now fifteen, was a beautiful, vibrant young woman. She was laughing with her friends, her hair flowing in the warm summer breeze. The frightened little girl in the pink pajamas who had once whispered the word “worthless” in a dark penthouse was gone, replaced by a girl who knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that she was cherished.
Dominic stood near the edge of the lawn, watching his children. He felt a soft hand slip into his.
He looked down to see Elena, beautiful as ever, a simple gold wedding band catching the fading sunlight on her ring finger.
“They turned out beautiful, didn’t they?” Elena whispered, resting her head against his shoulder.
“They did,” Dominic said, wrapping his arm around her waist, pulling her flush against his side. “Because they had the best mother in the world to show them what love actually looks like.”
Lucas walked over, holding two glasses of sparkling apple cider. He handed one to Dominic and one to Elena.
“A toast,” Lucas said, his voice deep and mature. He looked at his parents, his eyes shining with deep gratitude. “To the two people who showed me that no matter how dark the night gets, the morning always comes.”
