Chapter 9 - The Question Under the Chandelier

Two years passed like a seamless tapestry of growth, healing, and quiet domesticity.

The transition from a world of shadows to the light of day had not always been easy for Dominic, but Sylvia had become his anchor. In turn, he had become the rock upon which Sylvia and Mia built a safe, unbreakable home. The old fears of collection agencies, dark alleys, and desperate nights faded into distant memories, replaced by weekend picnics in the park, school plays where Dominic sat proudly in the front row, and quiet evenings spent talking by the fireplace.

It was a crisp autumn evening—almost exactly two years to the day since Sylvia had first walked into Belladonna Patisserie looking for a piece of leftover cake.

The Beacon Hill townhouse was quiet, save for the soft sound of jazz playing on the stereo. Mia, now nine years old and taller, was upstairs fast asleep after finishing her homework.

Sylvia sat at the grand mahogany dining table, reviewing financial reports for the upcoming fiscal quarter, when she heard slow, deliberate footsteps approach from behind.

A pair of strong arms wrapped around her waist, and Dominic rested his chin gently on her shoulder, breathing in the scent of her hair.

"You're working too late, Ms. Hayes," Dominic murmured softly against her neck.

"Somebody has to keep your empire from accidentally bankrupting itself," Sylvia teased, leaning back into his embrace with a contented sigh.

Dominic chuckled, pressing a soft kiss to her temple. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, dark velvet box.

Sylvia’s breath hitched. She froze, turning slightly in his arms to look up at him.

Dominic stepped back, knelt down smoothly on one knee right beside her chair, and opened the velvet box. Inside rested a ring—not the heavy, blood-stained signet ring he had tossed into the puddles two years ago, but a delicate, platinum band embedded with a brilliant, flawless diamond that caught the warm light of the chandelier.

"Dominic..." Sylvia whispered, her voice trembling slightly as tears of joy welled up in her eyes.

"When you walked into that bakery, you weren't supposed to be there," Dominic began, his deep voice steady, clear, and filled with an emotion he rarely showed anyone else. "You were just a mother trying to keep a promise to her little girl. But from the moment your eyes met mine in the dark, you changed everything. You brought light into a world I thought was permanently locked in shadow."

He looked up at her, his dark eyes shining with absolute devotion.

"I never believed I was capable of having a real family, of knowing what it means to truly come home. But with you and Mia, I found my peace. Sylvia... will you marry me? Will you let me spend the rest of my life making sure you never have to beg for anything ever again?"

Sylvia didn't hesitate for a single second. Tears streamed freely down her face as she threw her arms around his neck, pulling him up into a fierce, breathless embrace.

"Yes," she sobbed happily against his shoulder. "Yes, Dominic, a million times yes."

Dominic slid the diamond ring onto her finger, sealing the promise with a deep, tender kiss that erased every hardship of their past and promised an eternity of light.
