Chapter 6 - An Offer She Can't Refuse

Sylvia stared at Dominic, her mind spinning as she tried to process the surreal reality of her situation. The man standing before her commanded an empire built on violence, yet he had just handed her a brand-new life on a silver platter.

"I can't accept this," Sylvia whispered, shaking her head. "It's too much. It's... it's blood money, or mafia favors. I don't want to be tied to you or your world."

Dominic didn't look offended. Instead, he folded his hands neatly in front of him, his expression remaining completely calm.

"It's not a trap, Sylvia. It's an investment in your peace of mind," Dominic said smoothly. "The debts were legally settled through legitimate corporate channels that my associates manage. Your name is completely separated from your ex-husband's liabilities. No one will ever harass you or your daughter again."

"And what's the catch?" Sylvia demanded, her protective instincts flaring up. "Nothing in this life is free. What do you want in return?"

"Nothing that compromises your safety or your integrity," Dominic replied firmly. "In fact, I have a proposition for you—one that benefits us both."

Sylvia crossed her arms, narrowing her eyes. "I'm listening."

"You are intelligent, hard-working, and fiercely protective of your daughter. But right now, you are wasting your potential flipping pancakes and scrubbing office floors for pennies," Dominic said, walking over to a large window that overlooked the manicured gardens outside. "I own several legitimate businesses across Boston—real estate holdings, restaurants, high-end boutiques, and bakeries. One of my chief financial administrators recently retired. I need someone I can trust completely to oversee payroll and administrative accounts for my hospitality sector."

Sylvia let out a dry, disbelieving laugh. "You want a diner waitress to manage your corporate accounts? Mr. Vance, my degree is in business administration, sure, but I haven't worked in a corporate office in years. And besides—"

"And besides, you think my money is too dirty to touch?" Dominic turned back to face her, his dark eyes flashing with a sharp, intense light. "Every dollar in my legitimate holding companies is clean, audited, and legal. You would be working a standard 9-to-5 job with a salary that will allow you to buy your daughter all the strawberry cakes she could ever dream of, put her in the best private school in Boston, and never worry about rent again."

Sylvia stood in silence, the magnitude of the offer crashing over her. It was a lifeline—an absolute, unmitigated escape hatch from the cycle of poverty and fear she had been trapped in since Greg abandoned them.

"Why me?" she asked softly, her voice barely a whisper. "You could hire anyone in the city with a pristine resume."

"Because resume skills can be taught, Sylvia," Dominic answered, stepping closer. "Integrity cannot. You risked your life for a dying stranger in a bakery. That tells me everything I need to know about your character."

Before Sylvia could formulate a reply, the heavy oak doors of the study flew open.

Vincent rushed in, looking uncharacteristically flustered, holding a secure tablet in his hand.

"Boss, we have a problem," Vincent said, his eyes darting briefly toward Sylvia before locking back onto Dominic. "The Outfit's enforcers just hit one of our warehouses on the south side. They're testing our borders. And word on the street is they know about the bakery incident. They're looking for loose ends."

Dominic's demeanor transformed instantly. The calm, conversational businessman vanished, replaced in a split second by the ruthless, calculating mafia kingpin. The air in the room suddenly felt heavy, charged with lethal static.

"Which cell?" Dominic asked, his voice dropping an octave into a cold, dangerous register.

"Marconi’s crew," Vincent replied tightly. "They think you're still weak from the wound."

Dominic turned back to Sylvia, his expression softening just enough to acknowledge her presence.

"Vincent," Dominic commanded without breaking eye contact with Sylvia. "Take Ms. Hayes and her daughter to the Beacon Hill townhouse. Double the security detail. No one gets in or out without my direct clearance."

"Understood, Boss," Vincent nodded.

"Wait!" Sylvia panicked, stepping forward. "What about Mia? I need to pick her up from school!"

"Vincent will handle it," Dominic said decisively, turning back toward his desk where his phone was already buzzing continuously. "Your daughter is safe now, Sylvia. Both of you are. Let us handle the war."
