Chapter 6 - Shadows and Protectors

While hope returned to Room 412, dark clouds gathered in the underworld of Chicago.
Word had spread among Daniel’s rivals that the feared syndicate boss was spending millions on medical research and distraction. A rival faction led by a ruthless negotiator named Marcus Zhao saw an opportunity to strike. Zhao believed Daniel had gone soft, distracted by his dying child and a poor immigrant family.
One evening, as Nneka and Amara were being driven home by one of Daniel’s drivers, a black SUV cut off their car in a quiet alley near West Chicago.
Three armed men stepped out, intent on taking Nneka and Amara hostage to use as leverage against Daniel.
However, Marcus Zhao had made a fatal miscalculation.
Daniel had not gone soft; he had simply directed his absolute power into protecting the people who mattered.
Before Zhao’s men could even touch the door handle, four unmarked black sedans pulled into the alley, blocking both exits. Twelve of Daniel’s top operatives, led personally by Jae Min, stepped into the rain.
Jae Min walked up to the lead attacker, his face completely calm.
“You picked the wrong family,” Jae Min said softly.
Within two minutes, the threat was neutralized without a single shot fired near Amara’s window. Jae Min tapped on the back window of Nneka’s car.
Nneka rolled down the glass, holding Amara closely against her chest.
“Are you hurt, Mrs. Okafor?” Jae Min asked respectfully.
“We are safe,” Nneka said, her voice steady. She looked into Jae Min’s eyes. “Tell Daniel to finish what he is doing at the hospital. We are covered.”

Jae Min bowed deeply. “Yes, ma'am.”
That night, Daniel dealt with Marcus Zhao’s syndicate swiftly and permanently, ensuring that no shadow would ever cross the path of the Kwon or Okafor families again.
