Chapter 4 - The Awakening

The pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) was a maze of monitors, blinking lights, and the soft, rhythmic hiss of oxygen delivery tubes.
Sofia lay in the center of the room, looking impossibly small amidst the sea of medical equipment. A single clear oxygen cannula rested beneath her nose, and the heavy bandages across her chest marked the battlefield where her life had just been saved.
I sat beside her bed, holding her limp, warm hand, watching every rise and fall of her chest.
"She's resting comfortably," the PICU nurse whispered, adjusting an IV drip. "Anesthesia takes a while to wear off completely, but her vitals are textbook perfect."
Around noon, a familiar low rumble echoed from the hallway outside the PICU doors. Heavy footsteps approached, and the unmistakable silhouette of a massive leather vest filled the doorway.
Titan didn't enter the room immediately. He stopped at the threshold, removing his sunglasses and looking anxiously at the monitors.
"How is she?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
"She's resting," I said, standing up and motioning him inside. "Dr. Vance said the surgery was an absolute success. Her heart is fixed, Marcus."
Titan exhaled a breath that sounded like a sigh of relief from an engine clearing its lines. He walked over to the bedside, his heavy boots clicking softly against the floor, and looked down at Sofia.
Just as he reached the bedside, Sofia’s eyelids fluttered.
She blinked slowly, her unfocused eyes wandering around the room before finally landing on the massive biker standing beside her. A tiny, groggy smile crept across her pale lips.
"Hey there, tough guy," Titan murmured, leaning down so she could see him clearly. "Looks like you survived the garage."
Sofia let out a soft, sleepy giggle that instantly melted the tension in the room.

"My... engine... is fixed," she whispered, her voice raspy from the breathing tube.
"Sure is," Titan nodded, gently resting his large, scarred hand—devoid of any sharp edges—on the metal guardrail right beside her fingers. "And now you're officially part of the club."
