Chapter 3 - The Longest Hours

The waiting room on the fourth floor was a sterile purgatory of beige walls, uncomfortable vinyl chairs, and a humming vending machine that dispensed lukewarm coffee.

Hour one dragged by like a glacier. I paced the length of the linoleum floor until my sneakers squeaked against the wax. Rosalinda, the night charge nurse who was now off duty but refused to leave, brought me a fresh cup of coffee and forced me to sit down.

"She's in the best hands in the country, David," Rosalinda said gently, resting a comforting hand on my shoulder. "Dr. Vance has performed this exact procedure hundreds of times. Sofia is strong. You saw her last night—she’s got a fighter's heart."

"I keep thinking about what Titan said," I murmured, staring down into the dark coffee. "About how he went through it at four years old. How is a guy like that connected to a place like this?"

Rosalinda smiled faintly, pulling up a chair opposite me.

"Titan's real name is Marcus Vance—no relation to the doctor," she explained softly. "Twenty-five years ago, he was a runaway kid mixed up in the wrong crowds, dealing with severe congenital heart defects. He stumbled into this hospital half-dead. The doctors here saved his life. They kept him alive through multiple surgeries over three years."

She paused, looking toward the hallway that led to the OR.

"When he recovered, he dedicated his life to giving back. He joined the Bandidos years later, looking for brotherhood after a rough upbringing, but he never forgot where he came from. Whenever a child is terrified of surgery, whenever a kid refuses to cooperate because they're losing hope... Rosalinda calls him. And he drops everything, rides across the state, and shows them his scars."

The revelation washed over me, replacing my fear with an overwhelming wave of gratitude for the scarred giant waiting downstairs.

At hour three, the digital board above the surgical desk finally flashed.

Patient: Sofia Miller. Status: Procedure Complete. Recovery Phase.

Dr. Vance walked into the waiting room a few minutes later, stripping off his surgical mask and revealing an exhausted, yet triumphant smile.

"Everything went perfectly," Dr. Vance announced, wiping a bead of sweat from his forehead. "The holes are successfully repaired, and the pulmonary valve pressure has dropped back to normal levels. Her heart is strong, David. She’s going to make a full recovery."

I buried my face in my hands as the crushing weight of the past week finally evaporated, tears of pure relief spilling over my fingers.
