Chapter 9 - Building an Empire of Love

One year later.

The summer sun shone brightly over the lush, green lawns of Dante's estate. The air was filled with the sweet scent of blooming roses and the gentle sound of water splashing from the marble fountain in the courtyard.

Today was a celebration. It was Grace's first birthday, and the estate had been transformed into a magical fairy-tale garden. White silk tents stood on the grass, surrounded by soft pastel decorations, flower arches, and acoustic musicians playing gentle melodies.

Friends, legal allies, and trusted business associates gathered on the lawn, laughing and enjoying the afternoon. Sophia Vance was there, chatting with Mrs. Gable near the dessert table. Marco stood near the entrance, smiling as he watched over the estate, relaxed and happy.

I stood near the rose garden, wearing a flowing lilac summer dress. My hair fell in soft waves over my shoulders, and my skin glowed with health and happiness. My interior design firm had become one of the most sought-after studios in Manhattan, working on high-end luxury residences and commercial spaces. I was independent, successful, and completely fulfilled.

"Mommy!"

I turned around to see little Grace running toward me across the soft grass. She was a toddling, energetic miracle with big brown eyes, rosy cheeks, and dark curly hair. She wore a tiny white lace birthday dress and little yellow shoes.

"Careful, sweet girl!" I laughed, dropping to my knees and catching her in my arms, pulling her into a warm hug. Grace giggled delightedly, pressing her soft cheek against mine.

Heavy footsteps sounded behind us on the grass.

I looked up to see Dante walking toward us. He looked radiant. Wearing a tailored linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up and crisp trousers, he had completely shed the stern, dark aesthetic of his past. The cold, ruthless mask he once wore to protect himself from the world had vanished forever, replaced by a deep, abiding serenity.

Dante scooped Grace up into his arms, tossing her gently into the air until she squealed with laughter, before cradling her against his shoulder.

"Happy birthday, my little princess," Dante murmured, kissing her cheek. Grace wrapped her tiny arms around his neck, resting her head on his shoulder.

Dante walked over to me, wrapping his free arm around my waist and pulling me close against his side. He leaned down, pressing a warm kiss to my lips.

"Are you enjoying your day, my love?" Dante asked softly, his eyes scanning my face with the same deep devotion he had shown every single day for the past two years.

"It's perfect, Dante," I said, leaning my head against his shoulder. "Everything is perfect."

We watched our guests laughing on the lawn. Marcus was a distant, faded memory now—a dark chapter in a book that had led to a breathtakingly beautiful ending. I had learned that true strength wasn't about avoiding pain or fear; it was about having the courage to walk through the fire to find the life you truly deserved.

"I have a surprise for you," Dante whispered into my ear.

I looked up at him, smiling. "Another surprise? Dante, you already built a playground in the backyard and commissioned a portrait of Grace."

"This one is for you," he said gently, taking my hand and guiding me toward the wooden gazebo overlooking the river, away from the crowd.

Inside the gazebo, a small velvet box rested on a white marble table.

My heart skipped a beat.

Dante set Grace down on the carpeted floor of the gazebo, where she immediately began playing with a plush teddy bear. Then, Dante turned to me, taking both of my hands in his.

"Amelia," Dante began, his voice deep and unsteady with raw emotion. "Two years ago, a terrified, beautiful woman dropped a pregnancy test at my feet in a quiet restaurant. I told her that night that she would survive her choices. But the truth is... I was the one who was saved that night."

He dropped to one knee on the wooden floor of the gazebo, pulling the small velvet box from his pocket and opening it. Inside sat a breathtaking, flawless canary diamond ring, glowing brilliantly under the afternoon sun.

"You brought light into my dark world, Amelia," Dante said, looking up at me with tears shining in his eyes. "You showed me what it means to love without fear, to build a real home, and to be a true father. You and Grace are my life, my soul, and my future. Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife?"

Tears of pure happiness overflowed and streamed down my cheeks. I didn't hesitate for a single second.

"Yes!" I cried softly, dropping to my knees beside him and wrapping my arms tightly around his neck. "Yes, Dante! Absolutely yes!"

Dante let out a breathless laugh of pure joy, slipping the ring onto my finger before pulling me into a deep, passionate kiss. Grace trotted over, giggling, and squeezed herself into our embrace, wrapping her tiny arms around both of us.

Dante held us both in his powerful, protective arms, holding his entire world against his heart.
