Chapter 5 - The Trap is Set

Three weeks passed in a whirlwind of legal maneuvers and quiet transformation.

The restraining order was served to Marcus at his high-rise office in front of his entire executive board. Sophia had timed the delivery perfectly during a major client meeting, causing Marcus maximum embarrassment. His joint bank accounts were frozen by court order, pending a full forensic audit of his offshore holdings.

The news hit Wall Street like a bomb. Rumors began circulating about Marcus Vance’s financial irregularities and marital misconduct. His clients, terrified of scandal, began pulling their portfolios from his firm.

Meanwhile, inside Dante's estate, my life flourished. My morning sickness faded, replaced by a healthy, glowing appetite. My bump was just beginning to show—a tiny, sweet curve beneath my sweaters. I spent my days designing again, creating blueprints for a boutique interior design studio I dreamed of opening once the divorce was finalized.

Dante and I developed a quiet, comfortable rhythm. Every evening, no matter how busy he was running his sprawling business empire, he made time to eat dinner with me. We talked about architecture, art, philosophy, and history. I learned that beneath his formidable reputation, Dante was a deeply cultured, brilliant man who possessed a quiet humor and an unwavering sense of loyalty to those he protected.

One evening, as we sat by the fire in his study sipping warm tea, my phone rang. It was an unknown number.

I looked at Dante nervously. "Should I answer?"

"Put it on speaker," Dante said calmly, stepping beside my chair.

I pressed the button. "Hello?"

"Amelia!" Marcus's voice hissed through the speaker, tight with fury and desperation. He sounded ragged, stripped of all his usual polished elegance. "You pathetic little bitch! Do you have any idea what you've done? My firm is crumbling! My investors are walking out!"

I took a deep breath, keeping my voice cool and composed, just as Dante had taught me. "You brought this on yourself, Marcus. You lied, you cheated, and you stole from our estate."

"You think that mobster friend of yours can protect you?" Marcus snarled. "Dante Marchetti is a criminal! He's using you to get to my firm's assets! Do you really think a man like him cares about a broken, pregnant housewife?"

My heart stuttered. "How... how do you know I'm pregnant?"

A cruel laugh echoed from the phone. "Jessica saw the prescription records from your doctor's office before you left. Did you really think you could hide that from me? That baby is mine, Amelia! And as soon as it's born, I will sue you for full custody. I'll take that child from you, and you'll never see them again. You'll die penniless and alone!"

Panic surged through me like a physical shock wave. I gripped the edge of the desk, my breathing suddenly ragged. Custody. The word terrified me more than any financial ruin.

Dante’s eyes flared with a dark, absolute fury. Without a word, he reached over and pulled the phone from my hand.

"Vance," Dante said, his voice dropping into a register that made the room feel twenty degrees colder.

The line went dead silent for two full seconds. "Marchetti?" Marcus whispered, his courage instantly evaporating.

"Listen to me very carefully, you insignificant worm," Dante said softly, his voice trembling with a controlled, lethal rage. "You will never speak to Amelia again. You will never speak about her child again. If you so much as utter her name in public, I will not just destroy your firm. I will buy every debt you owe, I will seize every asset you possess, and I will ensure you spend the rest of your natural life in a federal penitentiary for tax fraud."

"You can't do that—" Marcus gasped.

"Try me," Dante interrupted flatly. "I have already bought forty percent of your firm's commercial debt as of four o'clock this afternoon. I am now your largest creditor, Marcus. You work for me now. And if you ever threaten Amelia or her baby again, I will foreclose on your life."

Dante ended the call and threw the phone onto the desk.

I was trembling, holding my stomach. "Dante... can he take my baby? Can he legal fight me for custody?"

Dante immediately dropped to one knee in front of my chair, taking both of my trembling hands in his broad, warm palm. He looked up at me with an intensity that made my heart leap.

"Listen to me, Amelia," Dante said, his voice softer than I had ever heard it. "No one is taking your child. Not Marcus, not the courts, not anyone. I give you my word as a Marchetti. As long as I am breathing, you and your baby are safe."

"Why do you care so much?" I cried, tears spilling over my lashes. "Why are you fighting so hard for a child that isn't yours?"

Dante looked at me for a long, silent moment. His thumb gently brushed a tear from my cheek, his touch surprisingly soft for a man whose hands held so much power.

"Because," Dante whispered, his eyes searching mine with a profound, undeniable sincerity, "a father isn't the man who gives a child blood. A father is the man who protects them, loves them, and stands between them and the dark. Marcus lost the right to be a father the moment he threatened you."

The truth of his words hung in the air, electric and overwhelming. Looking into Dante's fierce, protective eyes, I realized something terrifying and beautiful: I was falling in love with Dante Marchetti.
