Chapter 7 - The Trial of Fire

Spring arrived in New York with a burst of cherry blossoms and gentle rain. I was eight months pregnant now, radiant and happy.

I had officially opened my new interior design studio in Soho, financed entirely by my own settlement funds. My life was peaceful, filled with creative work, cozy evenings at the estate, and Dante's boundless affection. Dante had transformed into an incredibly attentive partner; he attended every doctor's appointment, helped me assemble the baby nursery, and read books on early childhood development late into the night.

However, the world Dante inhabited was never completely quiet.

Old rivals of the Marchetti family, sensing that Dante had softened due to his relationship with me, attempted a desperate power move. A rogue faction from a rival syndicate began targeting Dante's legitimate shipping enterprises, trying to force him into a territorial war.

Dante kept the details from me to spare me stress, but I could see the fatigue in his eyes when he came home late at night.

One evening in late April, Dante was attending a high-level dinner at an exclusive venue in Midtown to negotiate a peace treaty with the faction leaders. I was at the estate, sitting in the newly finished nursery, painting a mural of a starry night sky on the wall.

Around nine o'clock, the security lights around the estate suddenly flickered and died.

I froze, the paintbrush poised in my hand.

The grand estate was equipped with three backup generators, but none of them kicked in. The silence that fell over the house was absolute and terrifying.

"Mrs. Gable?" I called out, stepping out into the dark hallway.

No answer.

Suddenly, Marco, Dante's trusted security chief, appeared at the end of the hall, his weapon drawn. He looked tense, his eyes sweeping the dark shadows.

"Amelia," Marco whispered urgently, rushing toward me. "We have a security breach. Someone cut the main power lines and disabled the secondary grid from inside the perimeter."

My blood ran cold. "Who?"

"Rival syndicate men," Marco said, guiding me quickly toward a hidden panic room concealed behind the library bookshelf. "They knew Dante was away. They're trying to leverage you to force Dante into signing over his shipping ports."

Panic surged through me, but this time, it didn't paralyze me. Five months of living with Dante, watching his courage and determination, had changed me. I was no longer the fragile woman crying in a restaurant.

"Where is Mrs. Gable?" I demanded.

"She's secured in the basement staff quarters," Marco replied, entering a code into a concealed keypad behind a painting. The heavy steel door of the safe room slid open quietly. "Get inside, Amelia. It's bulletproof and has its own independent comms unit."

"What about you?"

"I'm going to clear the grounds," Marco said grimly. "Dante is already on his way back. He was notified the second the main grid went dark."

Before I could step inside the panic room, a heavy explosion rocked the front entrance of the estate. Glass shattered downstairs, followed by the sound of shouting and gunfire.

"Get in!" Marco shoved me gently into the panic room and hit the lock button.

The heavy steel door slid shut, sealing me in absolute darkness except for the green glow of the emergency control panel.

I sat on the padded bench inside the safe room, holding my large stomach, my heart hammering like a drum. I could hear distant muffled thuds through the reinforced walls. I closed my eyes and focused on breathing deeply, willing my body to stay calm for the sake of the baby.

Ten minutes passed that felt like ten years.

Suddenly, the control panel chimed. The external camera feeds flickered onto the small monitor screen.

Outside the estate, three black SUVs were parked on the lawn. But the intruders were not in control.

Dante had arrived.

On the screen, I watched Dante move like an absolute force of nature. Surrounded by his elite security detail, Dante moved through the shadows with ruthless precision. He didn't show fear; he showed complete, terrifying dominance. Within minutes, the intruders were completely disarmed and subdued, forced to their knees on the wet driveway.

Dante didn't wait to inspect the captives. He dropped his weapon into Marco's hands and sprinted up the front steps of the estate, his face contorted in pure panic.

"Amelia!" his voice echoed through the panic room intercom, raw and desperate. "Amelia! Are you okay?"

I quickly hit the release button. The heavy steel door slid open.

Dante was standing there, his suit disheveled, hair wild, eyes wide with terror. The moment he saw me standing safe inside, he let out a broken gasp, stepped forward, and pulled me into his arms with a force that almost knocked us over.

He buried his face in my hair, his massive frame trembling violently.

"Thank God," Dante whispered, his voice cracking with emotion. "Thank God you're safe. If anything had happened to you... if anything had happened to the baby..."

"We're fine, Dante," I cried softly, wrapping my arms tightly around his neck. "We're okay. Marco got me inside in time."

Dante pulled back, holding my face between his broad, warm hands, inspecting every inch of me to ensure I wasn't injured. "I'm sorry, Amelia. I brought this danger to your door. I promised to protect you, and instead—"

"Stop," I interrupted firmly, placing my hand over his mouth. "You saved us. You came for us. You always come for us."

Dante looked at me, the terror in his eyes slowly dissolving into an overwhelming depth of love and devotion. He kissed my hands, then dropped to his knees, pressing his cheek against my round belly, weeping silent tears of relief.

"I will burn the world before I let anyone hurt either of you," Dante swore softly into my sweater.

And in that moment, standing in the dark hallway of his estate, I knew that no force on earth could ever tear us apart.
