Chapter 8 - The Convergence

Before Vincent could explain further, the low, thundering roar of heavy diesel engines echoed across the quarry valley.
Three armored SUVs crested the ridge behind Vincent, their high-intensity LED light bars flashing blinding white and amber. Apex Global tactical teams spilled from the vehicles, weapons raised, led by a tall, impeccably dressed man in a trench coat—Director Sterling.
“Well, well, well,” Sterling said, his voice dripping with cool, corporate menace as he strolled forward, ignoring the armed operatives surrounding them. “Family reunions are always so messy. Put down the laptop, boy, or I’ll order my men to turn this entire clearing into a crater.”
Callum instinctively clutched the USB drive tighter in his hand, stepping back toward his mother.
Vincent moved swiftly, stepping between his family and Sterling’s advancing security team. “It’s over, Sterling. The transmission logs are already mirrored on three independent federal servers. Your domestic surveillance contract has been terminated by the Department of Justice as of four minutes ago.”
Sterling paused, a thin, chilling smile touching the corners of his mouth. He didn't look panicked; instead, he pulled a satellite phone from his pocket and pressed a single button.
“You think a few leaked files will destroy decades of institutional infrastructure, Vincent? We wrote the algorithms the DOJ uses to audit themselves,” Sterling replied smoothly. “By morning, your son will be framed as a domestic cyber-terrorist who hacked a defense contractor’s server, and you and your ex-wife will be classified as co-conspirators under the Patriot Act.”
A sharp crack cut through the night air—not from a rifle, but from the highway overhead.
Blue and red lights flashed across the cliffside in a brilliant, overwhelming wave. Dozens of unmarked federal cruisers, accompanied by state troopers and tactical units bearing FBI insignia, swarmed the upper access road, cutting off Apex’s retreat.
A megaphone blared from the lead cruiser: “Apex Global Security, drop your weapons immediately! This area is federally secured by order of the Attorney General!”
Sterling’s smile vanished. He turned toward his guards, but it was too late. Federal agents poured down the embankment from all sides, weapons drawn, subduing the corporate mercenaries before they could raise a single barrel.

Detective Vance stepped out from behind the lead federal vehicle, walking calmly toward the center of the clearing with a federal marshal at his side. He looked at Sterling, then at Vincent, before resting his eyes on Mara and Callum.
“Looks like you kids missed curfew,” Vance said dryly, holding up a pair of polished steel handcuffs as he walked toward Director Sterling.
