Chapter 6 - The Chase Through the Valley

The station wagon’s engine roared to life on the third crank, the tires spitting gravel across the driveway as Mara slammed the gearshift into reverse. She spun the steering wheel hard, backing out onto Maple Street just as the dark sedan rounded the corner of the house to cut them off.
“Hold on!” Mara yelled, flooring the accelerator.
The station wagon careened forward, sideswiping a plastic recycling bin before straightening out onto the main paved road. In the rearview mirror, the tactical sedan’s high beams blinded them, closing the distance with terrifying speed.
“Mom, take the county backroads toward the old industrial park!” Callum shouted from the passenger seat, his fingers flying across his laptop screen as he tethered his phone to the dashboard interface. “If we can get close to the regional cellular towers, I can broadcast the unencrypted logs onto the public emergency override network. Once it hits the open web, every federal agency and news outlet will see it simultaneously.”
“They’ll run us off the road before we make it five miles!” Dr. Harper yelled from the back seat, braced against the door handle.
“Not if we lose them in the quarry tunnels,” Callum replied grimly.
Mara cut the headlights completely, plunging the station wagon into pitch-black darkness as she veered sharply off the paved highway onto an unpaved logging trail. The car bounced violently over rocky terrain, branches scraping against the metal body like skeletal fingers.
Behind them, the pursuers overshot the turnoff, their bright headlights cutting a wide arc into the night sky before they braked hard and reversed.
Mara navigated the treacherous switchbacks by memory alone, pushing the aging station wagon past its mechanical limits. The smell of burning rubber filled the cabin, but she didn't dare ease up on the gas. They plunged deeper into the limestone quarry valley, surrounded by towering walls of jagged rock and abandoned heavy machinery.
She killed the engine fifty yards inside a cavernous concrete loading dock, coasting silently into the shadows behind a rusted excavator.
Inside the hushed cabin, the only sound was the heavy, ragged breathing of three terrified fugitives.
Through the front windshield, they watched the dark sedan sweep past the quarry entrance, its searchlights scanning the perimeter walls.
“We’re trapped here if they double back,” Dr. Harper whispered, checking her watch. “How long until Maisie wakes up at the hospital alone?”
“She isn't alone,” Mara said, her voice dropping an octave as resolve hardened her features. “My sister-in-law is meeting her room nurse at St. Jude’s. But we aren't running anymore. It’s time to end this.”

Callum looked up from his glowing screen, a triumphant smile breaking through his tension. “Upload complete. The encrypted telemetry data from the toys and Apex Global’s local relay server has been pushed to every major investigative journalism portal and federal oversight database in the country. It’s live. They can’t scrub it now.”
Suddenly, the red laser dot of a tactical rifle scope swept across the dashboard, fixing dead-center on Callum’s chest.
