Chapter 5 - The Siege at Maple Street

“Get away from the windows!” Dr. Harper ordered sharply, grabbing Mara by the arm and pulling her flat against the hallway wall.

Callum slammed the lid of his laptop down, unplugging a portable flash drive. “I found the signal bounce,” he whispered urgently. “The transmission logs aren't going to a cloud server in the city. They’re pinging a local repeater router registered under a shell corporation linked directly to my father’s former employer—Apex Global Security.”

The dark sedan rolled past the house, its engine humming with a low, throttled purr. Brake lights flared crimson against the brick facade before the car came to a complete stop directly in front of their driveway.

The doors didn't open immediately. A heavy, suffocating silence descended upon the living room, broken only by the ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner.

“They know we extracted the device,” Mara said, her pulse roaring in her ears. Adrenaline surged through her veins, replacing fear with a sharp, cold determination. She wasn't going to let anyone hurt her children again. “Callum, do you have the decryption keys for the logs you pulled?”

“Downloaded and encrypted on this drive,” Callum said, holding up the small USB stick. “If they breach the house, this is what they’re looking for. It proves Apex Global was monitoring domestic targets illegally using civilian decoys like Maisie’s toys.”

A heavy knock echoed against the front door. It wasn't the polite rap of a neighbor or a delivery driver; it was three deliberate, authoritative thuds that shook the doorframe.

“Open the door. Federal oversight. Open up!” a muffled, flat voice commanded from the porch.

“Don’t answer it,” Dr. Harper warned, her eyes darting around the room for an alternate exit. “Those men aren't federal marshals. Look at their boots through the bottom window pane. Tactical combat boots, non-regulation. Private security contractors.”

A loud crack echoed through the front entryway as the deadbolt sheared away from the wooden jamb. The front door swung inward with violent force, slamming against the drywall.

Three men stepped into the foyer. They wore civilian jackets over tactical body armor, their faces half-obscured by ballistic caps and dark shades. The lead operative drew a suppressed sidearm from his hip holster, sweeping the living room with practiced, methodical precision.

“Secure the package and the data,” the lead man barked to his associates.

Mara didn't hesitate. She grabbed a heavy brass floor lamp from beside the couch and hurled it directly at the lead operative’s legs, catching him off guard and sending him stumbling backward into the coat rack.

“Run!” Mara screamed, grabbing Callum by the collar.

They bolted toward the back kitchen door just as Dr. Harper threw a heavy ceramic vase at the second intruder, shattering it against his shoulder armor. They sprinted out into the cool night air, heading toward the detached garage where Mara’s station wagon sat parked.

Bullets chewed through the wooden fence posts beside them, splintering wood into the night air with terrifying velocity.
