Chapter 9 - The Promise of Tomorrow

Later that evening, after Chloe had finally drifted off to a deep, peaceful sleep in her crib, I sat out on the front porch with a mug of hot chamomile tea.
The sun was dipping below the horizon, painting the sky in brilliant shades of amber, violet, and deep indigo. The world was quiet, save for the distant rustle of wind through the trees and the soft hum of crickets in the grass.
Footsteps crunched softly on the gravel walkway.
Caleb walked up the porch steps, carrying his backpack over one shoulder. He stopped and leaned against the wooden railing, looking out at the fading light.
"Hey," he said quietly.
"Hey," I replied, smiling. "Finished with algebra?"
Caleb groaned and rolled his eyes. "Conquered it. X equals twelve, and I never want to see it again."
I laughed, setting my mug down on the side table. "Good job. You want some hot chocolate before bed?"
"Actually... yeah, that sounds great." He lingered for a second, shifting his weight from one foot to the other. "Hey, Mara?"
"What is it, Caleb?"
He looked down at his sneakers, then up at me, his hazel eyes clear and steady. "Thanks. For everything. For... not walking away like everyone else."

My heart swelled. I stood up, walked over, and pulled the boy into a warm, fierce hug—the kind of hug every kid deserves to receive.
"You didn't walk away from me either, Caleb," I whispered against his hair. "We saved each other."
