Chapter 10 - A Happy Ending

Years later, the yellow farmhouse on the outskirts of the city was no longer just a temporary refuge; it was a home filled with laughter, loud music, homework papers scattered across the dining table, and the patter of little running feet.
Chloe was a bright, energetic six-year-old who loved painting and running around the backyard with our golden retriever.
And Caleb?
Caleb had graduated at the top of his high school class, earned a full scholarship in criminal justice, and was well on his way to fulfilling his dream of joining federal law enforcement—wearing a badge not to intimidate, but to protect people the way he had protected me on that rainy station platform years ago.
Standing on the same front porch on a bright, beautiful spring afternoon, I watched Chloe chase bubbles across the lawn while Caleb—now a tall, confident young man home on college break—laughed as he tossed a baseball with her.
My mother walked out onto the porch, handing me a fresh cup of coffee, and smiled as she leaned against the railing beside me.
"It's a good life, isn't it?" she asked softly.

I wrapped my hand around the warm mug, feeling the steady, unbroken beat of my own heart, and smiled as the spring breeze brushed against my face.
"It’s the best life," I whispered. "We finally made it home."
