Chapter 5 - The Midnight Visitor

Before the nurse could answer the call button, the heavy double doors of the emergency ward swung open again.

It wasn't Officer Ramirez.

A tall man in a dark trench coat walked briskly down the corridor. He didn't look like a police officer, nor did he look like a doctor. He wore a sharp fedora pulled low over his forehead, and his sharp, angular jawline was shadowed by the dim overhead lighting.

Dr. Vance stepped out from the nurses' station to intercept him. "Excuse me, sir, visiting hours ended an hour ago. Patients are resting."

The man stopped, lifting his head just enough to reveal a pair of piercing, intelligent blue eyes. He flashed a small leather badge case.

"Federal Bureau of Investigation," the man said smoothly, his voice low and commanding. "Special Agent Marcus Reed, Financial Crimes Division. I'm here to speak with Mrs. Mara Ellison."

Dr. Vance blinked, stepping aside immediately. "Of course, Agent Reed. She's in bed three."

Agent Reed strode down the aisle, his boots clicking rhythmically against the floor. He stopped beside my bed, pulling a small notebook from his coat pocket.

"Mrs. Ellison?"

"I'm Mara," I said, sitting up straight. "Did Officer Ramirez send you?"

"In a manner of speaking," Agent Reed replied, glancing briefly at Caleb before turning his full attention back to me. "Our division has been tracking Vance & Ellison Financial for over eight months. We knew money was being funneled offshore, but we lacked the cryptographic keys to break their primary internal ledger. That flash drive you had in your purse... it's the master key we've been waiting for."

"Gavin and Julian," I said. "They're partners in the whole thing."

"Partners in crime," Agent Reed corrected with a faint, grim smile. "Julian Vance tried to claim ignorance at the precinct, and Gavin Ellison is currently shouting about civil rights violations. But with the files on this terminal, their little empire is officially finished."

He pulled out a secure data cable from his pocket, plugging one end into my tablet and the other into a portable drive he carried. Within seconds, a secure progress bar filled the screen: Data transfer complete.

"Thank you, Mrs. Ellison," Agent Reed said, pocketing the drive. "You've likely saved hundreds of investors from financial ruin."

"What happens to them now?" I asked, my voice steady.

"Arrest warrants are already being processed," Agent Reed said. "Federal custody, no bail. They'll be facing multiple counts of wire fraud, grand larceny, and corporate conspiracy. They won't see daylight for a very long time."

A massive wave of relief washed over me. The invisible weight that had been crushing my chest since morning finally lifted. I placed a hand over my stomach. The baby gave a gentle, rhythmic kick, as if celebrating our freedom.

Agent Reed turned to leave, then paused, looking back at Caleb.

"And who is this young man?"

"This is Caleb," I said, a warm smile touching my lips. "He's my hero today. He stopped a theft, saved my glucose tablets, and made sure the evidence stayed where it belonged."

Agent Reed looked Caleb up and down, noting the oversized green jacket, the split lip, and the bright, sharp intelligence in the boy's eyes.

"Well, Caleb," Agent Reed said, offering a respectful nod. "It looks like you've got a bright future in investigations. Ever thought about law enforcement?"

May you like

Caleb grinned, a genuine, wide smile that chased away the shadows on his face. "Maybe. Once I finish high school."

"Good plan," Agent Reed chuckled, tipping his fedora before turning and walking briskly out of the ward.
