Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Web

Over the next two weeks, the story of the Alcázar family dominated the news headlines across Mexico. The arrest of the prominent Cárdenas family sent shockwaves through the elite social circles of Monterrey. The press scrambled for details, but Santiago maintained a ironclad wall of privacy around his estate.

Inside the mansion, a quieter, much more profound transformation was taking place.

Santiago immediately hired a team of private educators, pediatric specialists, and child psychologists to help Lucía adjust to her new reality. But more than anything, he dedicated his time to being present. The billionaire executive, who used to work fourteen-hour days, now canceled afternoon meetings to sit on the floor and color with his daughter.

For Camila, the transition was far more complicated.

She struggled with the sudden shift from servant to mistress of the house. On her first week living in the suite, she tried to make the bed herself and wash her own dishes in the main kitchen, much to the confusion and distress of the domestic staff, who now viewed her with immense respect and sympathy.

One evening, Santiago found Camila standing in the dark kitchen, staring out the window toward the staff quarters in the courtyard.

“You can’t sleep?” Santiago asked softly, slipping a warm wool sweater around her shoulders.

“It feels like a dream,” Camila admitted, wrapping the sweater tightly around herself. “Every morning I wake up expecting Miss Renata to be screaming at me, or expecting to be told that Lucía and I have an hour to pack our bags.”

Santiago stepped around to face her, taking both of her hands in his. “I know it will take time for the fear to go away, Camila. But you are safe here. Lucía is safe.”

“I’m afraid of what people will say about her,” Camila confessed, her voice barely a whisper. “The news… the tabloids. They’ll call her illegitimate. They’ll say I used her to get your money.”

“Let them say whatever they want,” Santiago said fiercely. “In two days, we are holding a formal press conference. Not to defend ourselves to the public, but to officially recognize Lucía as my legitimate daughter and sole primary heir to the Alcázar Group.”

Camila looked up at him, her eyes wide. “Are you sure? That will put her right in the center of the spotlight.”

“It will put her under my absolute protection,” Santiago corrected gently. “No one will ever look down on her again. And no one will ever disrespect you again.”

He hesitated for a moment before continuing, his eyes searching hers. “Camila… when we were younger, in that tiny apartment in Puebla, we didn’t have money or titles. But we had truth. I lost you because of lies built by people who thought they knew what was best for me. I’m not letting lies control our lives anymore.”

Camila felt a warm tear run down her cheek, but this time, it was not born of sadness or fear. For the first time in four years, she felt the heavy knot in her chest begin to loosen.
