Chapter 8 - A New Foundation

The transition to the new apartment on Maple Street was smoother than anyone had dared to hope. It was a sunlit, second-floor unit with large windows that overlooked a bustling community park filled with green grass, oak trees, and the joyful laughter of children playing on the swings.
There were no hidden cavities behind the wallpaper here. The walls were solid, thick, and filled only with insulation and peace.
Elena had returned to therapy twice a week, working hard to process the trauma of the gaslighting and the severe sedatives that had been administered to her system without her knowledge. Day by day, the fog that had clouded her mind lifted, revealing a strong, devoted mother who poured all her love and energy into caring for Leo and little Noah.
Leo had returned to school, where he quickly made friends in his third-grade class. He no longer jumped at sudden noises or checked behind doors when the lights went out. The nightmares of the Shadow had finally begun to fade into the distant past, replaced by the normal, messy, wonderful routine of childhood.
On a crisp Saturday morning in late spring, a moving van was parked down on the street, though most of the heavy lifting had already been done.
Claire Dawson walked up the front steps of the apartment building, carrying a large, freshly baked apple pie wrapped in a checkered cloth. She pushed open the glass lobby door and climbed the carpeted stairs to Apartment 2B, where the door stood wide open to let in the fresh breeze.
Inside, boxes were piled neatly against the walls, and the sound of laughter echoed from the kitchen.
“Knock, knock!” Claire called out, stepping across the threshold.
Elena rushed out of the kitchen, wiping her hands on a floral apron, and pulled Claire into a warm, genuine hug. “Claire! I’m so glad you could make it. We’re just finishing up unpacking the kitchenware.”
“I brought dessert,” Claire smiled, holding up the pie box. “Though I can’t guarantee it will survive Leo’s inspection.”
As if summoned by his name, Leo came tearing out of his new bedroom holding a superhero action figure, skidding to a halt with a wide grin. “Nurse Claire! Did you bring pie?”
“Apple cinnamon, your favorite,” Claire laughed, handing the box to Elena.

From the living room came the soft, contented cooing of baby Noah, who was resting in his modern stroller near the sunny window, bathed in warm, natural light. No shadows. No strange noises. Just the sound of a family finally living in the light.
Vance arrived shortly after, carrying a toolbox to help fix a loose cabinet hinge in the kitchen, followed by a local social worker who stopped by for a routine, supportive check-in. Everything about the scene radiated stability, safety, and enduring hope.
