Chapter 5 - Descent into the Underbelly

The air inside the abandoned municipal water treatment plant on the edge of town smelled of stagnant iron and sulfur. The facility had been decommissioned in the late nineties, leaving behind a sprawling labyrinth of concrete basins, rusted catwalks, and massive drainage pipes that emptied into the swollen river below.

Officer Vance and a tactical backup team moved through the cavernous main hall, their flashlights cutting through the thick darkness like laser beams. Every boot step echoed off the damp concrete walls, amplified in the hollow silence.

“Search every sector,” Vance commanded into his radio, his breath pluming in the chilly air. “He’s down here somewhere. Watch the access hatches to the utility shafts.”

Deep within the subterranean complex, Julian Vance crouched in the shadows of a massive filtration tank. His mud-soaked coat hung loosely over his emaciated frame, and his hands trembled as he clutched a heavy iron pipe. His eyes darted frantically around the damp chamber, filled with a wild, paranoid fury.

They had found his nest. They had taken his sanctuary.

“They ruined it,” Julian whispered to himself, rocking back and forth on his heels. “They brought the light into my walls. The mother failed me. The boy betrayed me. Now I have to start all over again.”

A beam of light swept across the wet floor just outside his hiding spot.

“Over here! I see tracks leading toward the drainage tunnel!” shouted an officer’s voice from the upper catwalk.

Julian didn't hesitate. He scrambled up the rusted ladder leading to the main service walkway, intending to slip into the secondary storm drain that led beneath the city streets. But as he emerged onto the metal grating, a flashlight beam caught him directly in the eyes, blinding him.

“Freeze! Drop the pipe!” Vance yelled, stepping out from behind a concrete pillar with his weapon drawn.

Julian shielded his face with a filthy arm, his lips curling back in a snarl that bore little resemblance to a human expression. “You always were the lucky one, brother! They gave you the house, they gave you the sun, while they buried me alive in the dark!”

“Julian, it’s over,” Vance said, stepping slowly forward, keeping his gun steady. “You need help. Let’s end this madness right now.”

“It’s never over!” Julian shrieked, raising the iron pipe.

Instead of attacking, Julian suddenly spun around and vaulted over the rusted railing of the catwalk, plunging downward into the shallow, rushing water of the concrete retention basin below.

“Don't let him get to the drainage pipe!” Vance shouted, rushing to the edge.

Julian hit the water with a heavy splash, rolling onto his hands and knees and scrambling toward the gaping circular opening of the main storm sewer. The water rushed violently through the conduit, fed by the heavy rain above.

Vance and two officers descended the metal stairs in seconds, sprinting across the wet concrete basin to cut off his escape route before he could disappear into the subterranean maze.
