Chapter 7 - Healing the Wounds

Three weeks passed since the stormy night that had shattered and reshaped the lives of the residents on Elmwood Street. The municipal workers had officially condemned the Victorian house, boarding up its doors and windows before tearing down the corrupted walls to expose the hidden utility shafts that had harbored a monster for decades.

At Saint Jude’s General Hospital, the pediatric ward was bathed in the warm, golden light of an afternoon sun filtering through the blinds.

Elena sat upright in her hospital bed, looking healthier and more grounded than she had in years. The heavy, vacant stare that once defined her features was gone, replaced by a fierce, alert maternal warmth. In her arms rested the newborn baby, now officially named Noah—a name chosen by Leo to signify a fresh start after the flood.

Claire Dawson pushed open the door with a gentle knock, carrying a small cardboard box filled with children's books and a new set of superhero pajamas.

“How are my favorite patients doing today?” Claire asked with a bright smile.

“We’re doing wonderful, Claire,” Elena said, her voice rich with emotion. She looked down lovingly at Noah, who was sleeping soundly against her shoulder. “The doctors say I can be discharged by tomorrow afternoon. My sister is driving in from out of state to help us get settled into our new apartment across town.”

Leo, who had been sitting at the foot of the bed drawing pictures in a coloring book, hopped down and ran over to Claire, giving her a quick hug around the waist.

“Look what I drew, Nurse Claire!” Leo proudly held up a crayon drawing. It depicted a bright yellow house with a smiling sun, two children playing in the front yard, and no hidden walls anywhere in sight.

Claire beamed, kneeling down to examine the artwork. “That is a masterpiece, Leo. It’s beautiful.”

“The police officer—Uncle Vance, as Mom calls him now—said the bad man is locked away in a hospital where he can’t hear the walls anymore,” Leo whispered, his voice steady and devoid of fear.

Claire looked up to see Officer Vance standing quietly in the doorway, holding a bouquet of bright yellow sunflowers. He gave Claire a warm, appreciative nod before stepping into the room to hand the flowers to Elena.

“Just stopped by to drop off the final social services paperwork,” Vance said gently, smiling at Leo. “Everything is approved. You guys have a safe place waiting for you, far away from Elmwood Street.”

Elena wiped a stray tear of gratitude from her cheek. “Thank you, Vance. And thank you, Claire. If you hadn’t answered that emergency room door at two in the morning... I don't want to think about what would have happened.”

“You saved each other,” Claire corrected softly, placing a hand on Leo’s shoulder. “Leo carried his brother through the rain because he refused to let him fade away.”

The room filled with a comfortable, healing silence—a stark contrast to the terror and chaos that had brought them all together just weeks before.
