Chapter 7 - The Arrest
The legal gears turned rapidly. Evan Bennett's defense attorney attempted to argue for bail, claiming his client was a respected medical professional with no prior criminal record. However, the prosecution presented the mountain of forensic evidence: the spiked blood tubes, the logbook of poisons, the synthetic thyroid hormone found in his possession, and the testimony of his own eight-year-old daughter.
Bail was denied. Evan was remanded to the state penitentiary to await trial.
A week after Leo’s birth, Claire was officially discharged from the hospital. Leo was also cleared to leave the NICU, a healthy, robust baby boy.
I stood at the hospital entrance as the nurse wheeled Claire out in a wheelchair, holding Leo wrapped in a blue blanket, with Mia walking proudly by her side carrying her pink backpack.
"Thank you, Dr. Reyes," Claire said, reaching out to shake my hand. "You didn't just deliver my baby. You saved my entire family. If you hadn't listened to Mia..."
"Mia is the real hero here," I said, smiling down at the little girl. "She was brave enough to speak up when everyone else was ready to dismiss her. You have an incredible daughter, Claire."
"I know," Claire said, tears of gratitude shining in her eyes. "We're going to stay at my sister's house in Connecticut for a while. A fresh start."
"That sounds perfect," I said. "Keep up with your follow-up appointments, and take care of yourself."

As I watched them get into her sister's car and drive away, I felt a deep sense of satisfaction. In emergency medicine, we often see patients at their worst moments and never find out what happens to them after they leave our doors. But with Claire and Mia, I knew they were on the path to healing.
However, the battle wasn't entirely over. The trial of Evan Bennett was set for three months later, and Claire would have to face her abuser one final time.
