Chapter 4 - The Counter-Analysis

I ran down the hallway, Detective Miller right behind me. We burst through the double doors of the labor and delivery unit just as two hospital security guards arrived at Room 412.

Inside, the scene was chaotic. Claire was sitting up in bed, her face flushed, her IV line torn from her arm, dripping blood onto the linoleum. Evan stood over her, his hands gripping her shoulders, pinning her down.

"You're going to sign these papers, Claire!" Evan snarled, his mask of the doting, concerned husband completely gone. He held a clipboard with legal custody relinquishment forms. "The doctors already know you relapsed. They found the drugs. If you sign this now, I won't press charges for fetal endangerment."

"Get your hands off her!" I shouted, stepping into the room.

Evan spun around, his eyes wild. "Get out of here! This is a family matter. My wife is a drug addict, and I am protecting my children!"

"Your wife is clean, Evan," I said, stepping closer to shield Claire. "We ran a second toxicology screen. The one you didn't get to tamper with. It's completely clean. No drugs. No benzos. Nothing."

Evan's face went white. "That's impossible. The lab... the lab makes mistakes."

"The lab also ran a DNA and blood type test on the first tube—the one you dropped on the floor and tried to swap," Detective Miller said, stepping into the room and drawing his badge. "It doesn't match Claire's blood type. But I bet a quick DNA swab will prove it matches blood you drew from someone else—or perhaps yourself—spiked with narcotics."

Evan backed away, his hands shaking. "You don't know what you're talking about. You're framing me."

"And then there's the matter of the synthetic thyroid hormone," I added. "The poison you've been putting in her tea to cause her preeclampsia. We've already contacted the police department. They are executing a search warrant on your home, including your locked box in the basement, as we speak."

At the mention of the locked box, Evan’s composure completely shattered. He looked at the door, then at Claire, and finally at me. He realized the game was over. The elaborate web of lies he had spun for years to control Claire and isolate her from her daughter was disintegrating.

"You ruined everything," he hissed at Claire. "You were supposed to be the weak one."

"Step away from the patient and put your hands behind your back," Detective Miller ordered, pulling his handcuffs from his belt.

Instead of complying, Evan lunged forward, grabbing a heavy metal IV pole and swinging it wildly. The pole struck one of the security guards, sending him crashing to the floor. Evan bolted out the door and into the stairwell before anyone could stop him.

"Stay with Claire!" Miller yelled to me as he and the second security guard took off after Evan.

I immediately rushed to Claire’s side. She was hyperventilating, her hand clutching her chest where the IV had been ripped out.

"Claire, breathe. It's okay. He's running, but the police are here. He won't get far," I comforted her, wrapping a clean bandage around her bleeding arm.

"My baby... Mia..." Claire sobbed, her body shaking with a decade's worth of stored trauma. "Is it true? Was I never... did I never take those drugs?"

"You never did, Claire," I said softly, looking her straight in the eyes. "He gaslighted you. He poisoned you and fabricated the evidence to make you, the courts, and your family believe you were an addict. You are a victim of a horrible crime, but you are completely innocent. And you are going to get your daughter back."

Claire closed her eyes, letting out a sound that was half-sob, half-laugh. It was the sound of a woman finally breaking free from a prison she had been locked in for years.
