Chapter 6 - A Mother's Strength

Over the next three days, the transformation in Claire Bennett was nothing short of miraculous. Without the daily doses of thyroid hormone, her blood pressure normalized, and the color returned to her cheeks. The exhaustion that had weighed her down for months began to lift, replaced by a fierce, protective energy.
She spent every available moment in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), sitting beside the incubator of her newborn son, whom she named Leo.
Leo was thriving. Though he was born at thirty-five weeks, his lungs were strong, and he was quickly learning to feed. Mia sat on a stool next to Claire, watching her brother with a protective intensity that mirrored her actions in the ER.
"He looks like you, Mia," Claire said softly, gently stroking the baby's tiny hand through the incubator port.
"He has my nose," Mia agreed proudly. "And he has your eyes, Mommy."
I walked into the NICU cubicle, holding a clipboard. "How is our little fighter doing today?"
"The nurse says he might be able to come out of the incubator tomorrow," Claire said, her face beaming. "He's maintaining his temperature perfectly."
"That's fantastic news," I said, checking Leo's chart. "And your lab work looks pristine, Claire. Your thyroid levels are back to baseline, and your kidney function is completely normal. The physical damage is healing."
Claire's smile softened, but her eyes remained serious. "What about the legal side? Sarah said the emergency custody order was approved?"
"Yes," I replied. "The family court judge signed it yesterday. Evan's parental rights have been suspended indefinitely, and full, sole custody of both Mia and Leo has been restored to you. The state is also expunging your previous record from three years ago. The court recognized that the evidence used against you was fraudulently manufactured."
Claire let out a long breath, her shoulders relaxing. "I can't believe it's finally over. I feel like I've been underwater for years, and I'm finally breathing air."
"You are," I said. "But there is still one hurdle. The district attorney needs you to make a formal deposition tomorrow. They want to make sure the charges against Evan are ironclad. Attempted murder, child abuse, and chemical assault."
Claire nodded, her jaw tightening with newfound strength. "I'll do whatever it takes. He will never, ever get near my children again."
"I'll be there with you," Sarah Jenkins said, entering the cubicle. "And we have secured a pro-bono family lawyer who specializes in domestic abuse cases to assist you with the permanent custody transition. You are not alone in this, Claire."
Mia looked up from the incubator. "Mommy, is Daddy going to jail for a long time?"
May you like
Claire looked at her daughter, kneeling down to be at eye level with her. "Yes, sweetie. He is going to a place where he can never hurt us or anyone else again. You don't ever have to be afraid of him."
Mia hugged her mother's neck. "I'm not afraid anymore. Because we're together."
