Chapter 5 - The Knock on the Door

The silence in the living room was deafening, broken only by the faint, rhythmic breathing of the triplets sleeping peacefully in their bassinets in the corner.
Ryan stood paralyzed in the center of the room, his phone still clutched in a death grip against his ear, though the call had long since disconnected. His eyes were wide, bloodshot, and hollow.
"Ryan... talk to me!" Jessica shrieked, her voice losing its honeyed sweetness, turning sharp and shrill. "What does the bank mean by asset freeze? What about our trip to Paris? What about the apartment lease?"
Before Ryan could formulate a word, a loud, authoritative knock echoed loudly from the front door.
Knock. Knock. Knock.
Jessica jumped, clutching her designer handbag to her chest. "Are those reporters? Is it the police?"
Ryan swallowed hard, his throat dry as sandpaper. With hesitant, leaden steps, he walked toward the entryway and pulled the door open.
Standing on the porch were two men in dark suits, flanked by a uniformed police officer. They weren't paparazzi. They were federal agents from the white-collar crime division.
"Mr. Ryan Montgomery?" the lead agent asked, flashing a gold badge.
Ryan nodded numbly. "I... yes."
"We have a federal warrant for your arrest on charges of corporate fraud, embezzlement, and conspiracy to commit financial deception," the agent stated coldly. "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
"There's been a mistake!" Jessica cried out, rushing to the door, her face contorted with panic. "We didn't do anything! He's a respected architect! You can't arrest him!"
The officer looked at Jessica with clinical detachment. "Ma'am, if you are associated with the corporate shell accounts currently under investigation, I suggest you step back and contact legal representation immediately."
Jessica recoiled as if she had been slapped. She turned her wide, terrified eyes onto Ryan, the man she had conspired with for months to steal away from a postpartum mother. The realization hit her like a freight train: she had hitched her wagon to a sinking ship that had just hit an iceberg at full speed.
"You ruined us," Jessica hissed, her voice trembling with rage as the handcuffs clicked tightly around Ryan's wrists. "You stupid, arrogant fool! You told me you were untouchable!"

Ryan didn't defend himself. As the agents escorted him out past the threshold, his eyes drifted toward the dining table, landing on the untouched anniversary cake, and then finally to the signed divorce papers lying beside it.
He finally realized—with terrifying clarity—that the woman he had discarded wasn't weak or broken. She had simply stepped out of the way to let him destroy himself.
