Chapter 3 - The Penthouse Intrusion

The elevator doors opened directly into the sprawling, dimly lit penthouse apartment. The air smelled of fresh paint, expensive leather, and imported wine. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows offered a breathtaking, panoramic view of the glittering Seattle skyline, the Space Needle piercing the dark clouds in the distance.
I stepped inside, my soft sneakers making no sound on the polished hardwood floors.
The apartment was furnished, pristine, and entirely devoid of life—just the way Ryan liked things. No clutter, no baby toys, no evidence of human struggle. Just cold, modern luxury paid for by corporate accounts and joint savings that he assumed belonged entirely to him.
I walked straight to the master bedroom. True to form, Ryan had left his expensive leather briefcase unzipped on the king-sized bed. Inside lay the crown jewels of his carefully orchestrated deceit: his corporate laptop, a checkbook, and a thick folder labeled Asset Restructuring.
I flipped open the laptop. Because Ryan used the same predictable password combination for everything—our wedding anniversary combined with his dog's name—I bypassed the login screen within three seconds.
What I found on the screen made my breath catch in my throat. It wasn't just an ordinary divorce filing. It was a premeditated financial stripping. For the past six months, while I was undergoing high-risk fertility treatments and subsequently carrying our children, Ryan had been systematically siphoning funds from our joint corporate accounts into an offshore shell company registered under a fictitious name. He had planned to leave me with massive debts, zero liquid assets, and a court order that would make it nearly impossible for me to contest the division of property while caring for three newborns.
He hadn't just fallen out of love with me. He had planned to bankrupt me.
My hands trembled, not with fear, but with a surge of adrenaline so pure it felt like electricity. I plugged a high-speed flash drive into the USB port—a tool I had brought specifically for this purpose, having discovered his hidden financial spreadsheets a week prior. With a few rapid keystrokes, I downloaded every single transaction log, every email correspondence with his corporate conspirators, and every hidden asset record directly into my possession.
Then, I opened his corporate email client.
Ryan was scheduled to pitch the biggest real estate development deal of his career tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM with Vanguard Global—a multi-million-dollar contract that would make him senior partner. All the preliminary documents, architectural blueprints, and financial guarantees were stored right here.
With a cold, steady smile, I drafted an email to the senior board members of Vanguard Global, attaching a comprehensive dossier detailing Ryan's embezzlement of company funds, his falsification of structural safety reports on a previous project to cut costs, and his pending personal bankruptcy fraud.

I hit Send.
The email vanished into the digital ether, scheduled to detonate in their inboxes precisely at midnight, just as his celebratory dinner with Jessica would be reaching its peak.
