Chapter 5 - Facing the Storm in Court
Three months later, the family court hearing commenced. The courtroom was packed with journalists, industry executives, and legal observers. Daniel sat at the defense table, looking gaunt and hollowed out. His former high-priced defense attorney had withdrawn due to non-payment, leaving him with an overworked public counsel who clearly looked overwhelmed by the sheer volume of evidence against his client.
Daniel’s defense attempted to paint me as an ungrateful spouse who had maliciously planned a corporate takeover to financially ruin a devoted husband.
Then Marcus took the podium.
With surgical precision, Marcus presented detailed financial audits detailing every penny Daniel had siphoned from the family trust. Next came the expert testimony of corporate historians confirming the validity of Vanguard Sovereign Capital's equity hold. But the decisive blow came when Marcus played the high-definition security footage from our dining room on the night of our tenth anniversary.
The entire courtroom watched in stunned silence as Daniel threw the divorce papers, yelled abusive threats, demanded I leave with the children, and delivered the physical blow across my face while our children wept.
The judge, a seasoned magistrate known for her zero-tolerance stance on domestic abuse and financial intimidation, looked over her spectacles at Daniel with visible disgust.

"Mr. Vance," Judge Montgomery said, her voice like cracking ice. "Your actions demonstrate not only a profound lack of moral character, but a reckless disregard for the safety and psychological well-being of your own children. You sought to leave your family destitute through intimidation and violence."
The judge slammed her gavel down hard. "Full legal and physical custody of Leo and Maya is awarded exclusively to Mrs. Evelyn Carter. Mr. Vance’s parental rights are suspended pending mandatory psychological evaluation and anger management completion. Furthermore, the court orders the immediate liquidation of all martial assets under Mrs. Carter’s management to satisfy corporate debts and spousal restitution."
