Chapter 9 - A Legacy Preserved

The morning of our wedding was clear, blue, and bathed in gentle golden sunlight.

We held the ceremony right in the heart of the central garden, surrounded by hundreds of blooming white roses. There were no elaborate corporate arrangements, no media spectacles, and no empty shows of wealth. Just forty of our closest friends, family, local community members, and farm workers who had become our extended family.

Ethan stood proudly beside Julian as one of his groomsmen, looking sharp, healthy, and completely grounded. Margaret Vance sat in the front row, looking like a proud grandmother, wearing a subtle, triumphant smile.

I walked down the stone pathway alone, holding a bouquet of fresh white roses harvested directly from my father's original bushes. But as I walked, I didn't feel alone. I felt my father's presence in every rustle of the leaves, every beam of sunshine, and every breath of soft southern breeze.

He had planted those roses to protect me. He had left that secret envelope beneath the leaves to give me the weapons I needed to fight back. But most importantly, he had trusted me to become the master of my own destiny.

When I reached Julian at the wooden altar he had crafted with his own hands, he took my hand gently, his eyes filled with love and admiration.

"You look stunning, Claire," he whispered.

"I feel free," I whispered back.

We exchanged our vows beneath the shadow of the great oak trees—vows spoken with absolute honesty, quiet confidence, and a deep, enduring commitment to protect and nurture the life we were building together.

As the minister declared us husband and wife, the small crowd erupted into warm applause. Julian lifted me in his arms, kissing me deeply as the afternoon light bathed the garden in radiant gold.
