Chapter 10 - The Garden in Full Bloom

Five years after my ex-husband’s new wife stood in my garden and told me to pack my bags, I stood on the wraparound porch of Sterling Manor, holding a cup of morning coffee.
The estate was buzzing with quiet, happy life.
Down near the greenhouse, Julian was showing a group of young apprentice gardeners how to properly graft heritage stems. Near the barn, Ethan—who had moved back to Charleston six months ago to manage the estate’s sustainable timber production—was laughing as he loaded crates of fresh honey and flowers onto the farm truck.
And playing near the edge of the stone patio was our three-year-old daughter, Lily, her dark curls bouncing as she chased butterflies across the grass.
I walked down the steps, my slippers sinking into the soft earth, and knelt beside her near the main rose garden.
"Look, Mommy!" Lily giggled, pointing a tiny finger at a massive white rose blossom that had opened overnight. "It’s soft!"
"It is very soft, sweetie," I said, gently holding her hand so she wouldn't grab the stem directly. "But look closely down here. Do you see these?"
"Thorns!" she said proudly.
"That's right," I smiled, wrapping my arm around her tiny shoulders and pulling her close. "Thorns. Do you know why the rose has thorns, Lily?"
She shook her head, her bright hazel eyes looking up at me with curiosity.
"The thorns are there so the rose can protect its beauty," I explained softly, looking across the vast, thriving property that my father had saved and that I had brought back to life. "It reminds the world that anything sweet, valuable, and true is worth fighting for. And no one can ever take it away from you if you know how to stand your ground."

Lily nodded solemnly, gently touching the soft white petal with one finger, respecting both the flower and its thorns.
I stood up as Julian walked over, putting his arm around my waist and pulling me against his side. We stood together in the morning sun, watching our daughter laugh, surrounded by the sweet scent of blooming white roses—a sanctuary built on truth, guarded by resilience, and blooming in permanent peace.
