Chapter 8 - The Renewal of Sterling Manor

Two years after my father's passing, Sterling Manor had become a crown jewel of historical and environmental conservation in South Carolina. The trust was fully self-sustaining, funding grants for young agricultural researchers and hosting seasonal therapeutic gardening workshops for trauma survivors and veterans.

The main house, once heavy with the ghosts of my past marriage and the anxiety of my father's final days, was now bright, warm, and constantly filled with music, laughter, and light.

On a warm evening in late spring, Julian and I sat on the stone patio behind the house, watching the fireflies begin their slow, luminescent dance across the vast lawn.

"I got a letter from the state historic board today," I said, leaning back against Julian's arm as we sat on the wooden glider bench. "They're officially designating the white rose gardens as a protected historic botanical site. No future government or corporate entity can ever alter them."

Julian smiled, resting his chin lightly on top of my head. "Your father's grand plan is officially complete."

"No," I murmured, turning to look at him in the fading twilight. "My father gave me the tools and the land. But the life we've built here... that's ours."

Julian reached into his jacket pocket, pulling out a small, velvet-lined box. My heart skipped a beat, not with the old, familiar terror of uncertainty, but with a sudden, overwhelming warmth.

He opened the box. Inside rested a simple, elegant ring forged from rose gold, set with an antique-cut diamond nestled between two delicate, hand-engraved white rose leaves.

"Claire," Julian said softly, his hazel eyes shining with absolute devotion. "I didn't fall in love with this estate. I fell in love with the woman who defended it. The woman who works tirelessly every day to bring life and beauty back into the world. I want to build a future with you. Right here, and anywhere else life takes us. Will you marry me?"

I looked at the ring, then up into the face of a man who had shown me nothing but patience, respect, honesty, and unconditional support since the day he walked onto this property.

May you like

"Yes," I whispered, tears of pure joy brimming in my eyes. "Yes, absolutely yes."

He slipped the ring onto my finger, pulling me into a warm, fierce embrace as the night wind gently rustled through the white roses all around us.
