Chapter 7 - The Final Stand at the Harbor

The rain poured in sheets over the rusted corrugated metal of Pier 4 at the Boston docks. Giant shipping containers loomed like towering monoliths in the gloom, casting long, menacing shadows across the slick concrete.
The armored SUV pulled up behind a stack of containers, its headlights extinguished.
Nico stepped out into the freezing rain, pulling the collar of his heavy wool coat up against the gale. A sharp wave of pain flashed through his side where the surgical stitches held his healing flesh together, but he refused to let his stride falter. Behind him, Sophia stepped out of the vehicle as well, pulling a dark waterproof hood over her head, her jaw set with grim determination.
“Stay behind the container wall,” Nico instructed Marco, his voice carrying the absolute authority of a commander heading into battle. “If we aren't back in thirty minutes, you burn the ledgers and get Sophia and Leo out of the country.”
“Not happening, Boss,” Marco said, pulling the slide of his Glock back with a sharp, metallic clack. “We finish this together.”
Before Nico could argue, a chorus of sharp clicks echoed from the shadows between the container stacks. Flashlights cut through the pouring rain, blindingly bright, illuminating the wet pavement.
Step by step, Viktor Vance stepped out from the darkness. He was a bulky man with a cruel, broken nose and a sinister grin, flanked by a dozen armed enforcers holding silenced submachine guns.
“Well, well, well,” Vance sneered, his voice cutting through the sound of the crashing waves and heavy rain. “Look who crawled out of the hospital bed. Word on the street was that the great Nico Ferrante was dying, giving away his organs like a saint. And yet, here you are, walking right into your own funeral.”
Nico stood tall, his hands resting casually inside his coat pockets, his grey eyes locked on Vance with chilling indifference.
“You picked the wrong night to test me, Viktor,” Nico said, his voice ringing out clearly across the wet concrete. “The syndicate is finished. I’m stepping down. But before I leave, I’m cleaning out the trash.”
Vance let out a harsh, barking laugh. “Stepping down?! You don't get to retire from blood, Nico! You own this city, and if you won't run it, I will take it over your dead body!”
“That can arranged,” Nico murmured coldly.
Suddenly, from the shadows behind Vance’s men, the click of a dozen laser sights snapped red across the chests of Vance’s enforcers. Marco and his elite inner circle had quietly flanked the perimeter, cutting off every avenue of escape.
Vance’s smile faltered. His eyes darted around in panic as he realized they were the ones trapped.
“You arrogant bastard,” Vance snarled, raising his pistol directly toward Nico’s chest. “If I’m going down, I’m taking the king with me!”
Before Vance could pull the trigger, a sharp crack split the rainy night air.
Bang.
Vance’s pistol slipped from his fingers as a bullet tore cleanly through his shoulder. He screamed, dropping to his knees in the mud. Across the pier, Marco lowered his smoking weapon, his expression completely blank.
“Anyone else want to test the king?” Marco called out into the rain.
May you like
The remaining enforcers dropped their weapons to the concrete, raising their hands in surrender. The war was over. In less than two minutes, the bloody empire of Nico Ferrante had officially fallen, replaced not by another tyrant, but by absolute silence.
Nico exhaled slowly, letting his eyes close for a fraction of a second as the weight of twenty years lifted off his shoulders.
