Chapter 6 - The Shadows Closing In

The digital clock on the wall of the VIP recovery suite glowed 2:14 AM.
Nico sat up fully in the hospital bed, ignoring the sharp pull of his fresh surgical stitches. The color had drained from his face, replaced by the grim, calculating focus of a mafia don who had survived a dozen assassination attempts.
“How many men do they have?” Nico asked, his voice low, sharp, and lethal.
“At least two dozen,” Marco replied, keeping his voice down so Sophia wouldn't overhear every detail, though she was already standing up, sensing the shift in atmosphere. “They think you’re trapped in this hospital, helpless and recovering from organ surgery. They’re trying to seize the South Boston shipping routes before the transition of power can be finalized.”
Sophia stepped forward, her eyes flashing with renewed panic. “What’s happening? Marco, what are you talking about?”
“Nothing for you to worry about, Sophia,” Nico said, swinging his legs over the side of the bed and reaching for his clothes.
“Don't you dare lie to me!” Sophia snapped, stepping directly into his path. She pointed an accusing finger at him. “You just told me you were stepping down! You said you were walking away from the violence! And now you’re getting dressed to go fight a war in the middle of the night? You just had major surgery, Nico! Your body is literally missing an organ!”
“If I don't stop Vance tonight, he won't just take the shipping routes, Sophia,” Nico said, his voice dropping into a harsh, uncompromising register. “He will hunt down every loose end associated with my name. That means you. That means Leo. I built this mess, and I am the only one who can burn it to the ground permanently.”
Sophia stared at him, the terrifying reality of his underworld crashing down around her like an avalanche. For eight years, she had hidden from this exact nightmare.
“Then we go together,” Sophia said resolutely.
“No,” Nico barked.
“I am not staying here like a sitting duck waiting for your enemies to kick down my son’s hospital door!” Sophia shouted, her voice echoing fiercely off the sterile walls. “If you’re ending this war tonight, then I am staying right by your side until it’s over. You don't get to shut me out again, Nico. Not after everything.”
Nico stared at her, seeing the stubborn, unbreakable fire in her eyes—the same fire that had drawn him to her piano playing in that ballroom eight years ago. He realized arguing with her would waste precious minutes they didn't have.
“Marco,” Nico ordered, standing tall despite the wave of dizziness that threatened to buckle his knees. “Get the armored transport ready. Double the security detail on Leo’s room—nobody enters, nobody leaves, dead or alive. We’re heading to the harbor.”
“Understood, Boss,” Marco said, turning briskly toward the door.

Ten minutes later, a sleek black armored SUV slipped out of the underground ambulance bay of Boston General Hospital, merging into the rainy, slicked-up midnight streets of the city. Inside, Nico sat in the back seat, pressing a hand against his bandaged flank as the dull ache throbbed with every bump in the road.
Sophia sat beside him, her hand reaching out quietly in the dim light of the dashboard to catch his fingers. Nico looked down, interlacing his cold, calloused fingers with hers. Neither of them spoke a word. The silence was heavy with unspoken fear, unresolved history, and a fragile, burning hope for a future they had to fight to claim.
