Chapter 10 - The Promise of Tomorrow

The sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the Maine coastline in breathtaking shades of crimson, gold, and deep indigo.
On the wide back deck of the cliffside home, a wooden chessboard was set up on a small table, its carved ivory pieces catching the fading light of dusk.
Seven-year-old Leo sat cross-legged in his chair, resting his chin in his hands, staring intently at the board with a look of intense, comical concentration that looked frighteningly like his father’s.
“Your move, Dad,” Leo challenged playfully, tapping his small finger against the edge of the table.
Nico sat down opposite his son, a faint, amused smile playing at the corners of his mouth. He reached out, his large calloused fingers hovering over a knight before sliding it decisively across the polished wood.
“Check,” Nico said softly.
Leo gasped, his eyes widening in mock outrage. “Hey! You tricked me!”
“Not tricked, son,” Nico replied, his voice warm, rich, and filled with a quiet contentment he had never imagined possible. “Calculated.”
From the doorway of the house, Sophia leaned against the frame, watching them with a mug of tea in her hands. The soft evening breeze caught her dark hair, and a deep, abiding peace settled into her chest. The dark days of hospital rooms, anonymous donors, mafia syndicates, and painful secrets were gone, replaced by the simple, beautiful reality of a family finally reunited.
She walked over, setting her mug down on the table, and placed a gentle hand on Nico’s shoulder. He looked up, catching her gaze, and covered her hand with his own.

“Dinner is ready, gentlemen,” Sophia announced with a smile. “Chess can wait until tomorrow.”
“Tomorrow,” Nico repeated the word quietly, letting the syllable linger on his tongue like a rare, sweet luxury. For the first time in his life, tomorrow wasn't a threat
