Chapter 7 - A New Sanctuary

The Aspen mansion, for all its luxury, was stained with bad memories. Every corner held a shadow of Vanessa’s cruelty or Claire’s absence. Nathan knew they needed a fresh start.
He decided to move them to a place that held only light.
Years ago, before Claire had passed away, they had bought a small, sunlit cottage on the coast of Maine. It wasn't a mansion; it was a shingle-style house overlooking a quiet cove, surrounded by wild roses and pine trees. Claire had loved it there, calling it their "true home."
Nathan packed up their belongings, sold the Aspen estate, and flew the girls to Maine.
The moment they arrived, the atmosphere shifted. The air was salty and clean, filled with the cry of gulls and the gentle rushing of the tide. The cottage was warm, filled with soft linen sofas, stacks of books, and large windows that let in the golden morning light.
"It's beautiful, Daddy," Grace said, standing on the wrap-around porch and looking out at the ocean. Her cheeks, once sunken and pale, were starting to regain their natural, rosy color.
"It's yours," Nathan told them, kneeling down to hug them all. "This is our home now. No more big, empty houses. Just us."
In Maine, the healing accelerated. The girls began to explore the beach, collecting sea glass and smooth stones. Nathan spent his days with them, building sandcastles, reading stories by the stone fireplace, and teaching them how to garden.
He hired a gentle, experienced child therapist named Dr. Sarah Jenkins, who came to the house twice a week. Sarah didn't use clinical tests; she sat on the floor with the girls, playing with dollhouses and drawing pictures.
Slowly, the trauma began to untangle.

"They are incredibly resilient, Nathan," Sarah told him one evening as they watched the girls play on the lawn. "But they survived by relying on each other. You need to show them, consistently, that you are the anchor. That you won't disappear when things get hard."
"I'm not going anywhere," Nathan said, his gaze fixed on his daughters. "I will be here for every sunrise, every scraped knee, and every bedtime story. I promise."
