Chapter 10 - The Warmest Room in the House

Christmas Eve, eighteen years after the night that almost destroyed them.
The cottage in Maine was buried in a soft blanket of fresh snow, but inside, the air was warm and alive with the scent of pine, cinnamon, and roasting turkey.
The girls were twenty-three now.
Emma was a pediatric nurse, her fierce protective instinct channeled into healing sick children. Lily was a talented musician, her piano playing filling the house with beautiful, soaring melodies. Grace was a child advocacy lawyer, fighting for those who had no voice. And Sophie was a writer, her stories filled with hope, resilience, and the beauty of family.
They had all come home for the holidays, bringing with them laughter, love, and a deep sense of gratitude.
Nathan, now silver-haired but healthy and radiant, stood in the doorway of the kitchen, watching them. They were laughing as they decorated the tree, arguing playfully about where to put the gold star Claire had painted so many years ago, which they had preserved and brought with them.
"No, Lily, it goes on the very top!" Emma insisted, holding the star out of her sister's reach.
"I'm the musician, I have the best sense of balance," Lily countered, laughing.
"Let Grace do it, she’s the tallest," Sophie suggested, nudging her sister.
Nathan smiled, stepping into the living room. "How about we all do it together?"
The girls turned to him, their faces lighting up. They gathered around the ladder, each placing a hand on the old gold star as Nathan lifted them up, just as he had done when they were small. Together, they placed the star at the very top of the tree.
As the gold paint caught the warm light of the fireplace, Nathan looked around the room. He saw the warmth, the joy, the life they had built from the ashes of neglect.
There was no moldy bread. There was no cold silence.
Only the beautiful, unbreakable warmth of a family that had survived the dark and found their way back to the light.
"Merry Christmas, girls," Nathan whispered, wrapping his arms around his daughters.

"Merry Christmas, Daddy," they replied in unison.
And in that quiet, snowy night, the warm room Claire had wanted for them was finally complete.
