Chapter 3 - Warmth in the Ruins

The family dining room was still freezing when Nathan returned. He didn't want to startle the girls, so he knelt down before entering their line of sight.

"Emma? Lily? Sophie? Grace?" he called out softly. "It’s Daddy. I’m back."

Emma was still guarding the plate of moldy bread, her tiny frame shivering. Lily was crying silently, her tears freezing on her pale cheeks. Grace was holding Sophie under the table, trying to shield her smaller sister with her own body.

Nathan’s heart ached with a physical, crushing pain. He walked over to the thermostat on the wall. It had been manually locked and set to fifty degrees. He smashed the plastic casing with the heel of his hand, bypassing the lock, and turned the heat up to seventy-five. Within moments, the ancient, powerful vents of the mansion began to hum, pushing warm air into the room.

"Come here, sweethearts," Nathan whispered, sitting on the floor and opening his arms wide.

For a long, agonizing moment, none of them moved. They looked at him with wide, untrusting eyes. The six months of his absence, coupled with Vanessa's psychological cruelty, had built a wall between them.

Then, Lily broke. With a small, ragged sob, she threw herself across the floor and buried her face in his chest. Nathan wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close, feeling how terribly light she was. Her ribs were prominent beneath her thin nightgown.

"I've got you. I've got you, baby," Nathan murmured, his own tears finally breaking free.

Emma was next, letting go of her guard over the moldy bread and crawling into his lap. Grace slowly dragged Sophie out from under the table, and together, the four girls huddled against their father, absorbing his warmth. They shivered violently, not just from the cold, but from the sudden release of terror.

Nathan held them for what felt like hours, whispering promises, kissing their hair, and cursing himself for every flight he had taken, every meeting he had attended, every second he had spent away from them.

A knock at the door startled them. It was Dr. Vance. The kindly, silver-haired doctor rushed into the room, his medical bag in hand, his face pale with worry.

"Nathan," Chris breathed, looking at the girls. He immediately knelt beside them. "My god. What happened?"

"Vanessa," Nathan said, the name tasting like poison. "Check them, Chris. Please. Tell me they're going to be okay."

Dr. Vance gently coaxed the girls onto the soft sofa in the adjoining den. He checked their heart rates, their temperature, and their skin elasticity. His expression grew grimmer with every passing second.

"Mild hypothermia, severe dehydration, and acute malnutrition," Dr. Vance diagnosed, his voice trembling with a mix of professional restraint and deep anger. "They haven't had a proper meal in weeks, Nathan. Their bodies are in starvation mode. If you hadn't come home tonight..." He couldn't finish the sentence.

"What do we do?" Nathan asked, his voice shaking.

"No heavy foods. Their stomachs can't handle it right now," Chris said, opening his bag and pulling out electrolyte packets. "We start with warm broth, diluted juices, and slowly reintroduce nutrients. I'll administer an IV for hydration right here. We don't need to take them to a hospital tonight—it would traumatize them further. I'll stay here and monitor them."

As Chris set up the IVs, Nathan went to the kitchen. The main kitchen was stocked with truffles, caviar, and expensive cheeses for Vanessa's party, but the pantry in the back—the one meant for the girls—was bare except for stale bread and water. Nathan found a carton of organic chicken broth tucked away. He warmed it on the stove, his hands shaking so badly he spilled half of it.

When he brought the warm broth back, he fed them himself, spoonful by spoonful. They ate like starving birds, eyes wide, watching him as if they expected the food to be snatched away at any moment.

"More, Daddy?" Sophie whispered, speaking for the first time.

"As much as you want, my darling," Nathan promised, his heart breaking anew. "As much as you want."
