Chapter 4 - The Confession in the Driveway

Two North Carolina State Highway Patrol cruisers and one local police unit pulled up in front of our house, their blue and red lights flashing against the brick facade. The heavy wooden side gate rattled as Officer Vance, a veteran cop I recognized from a local neighborhood watch meeting, rapped sharply on the wood.
“Open up. State police,” Officer Vance called out.
Arthur unlocked the latch from the inside and pushed the gate open. Officer Vance stepped into the yard, his hand resting on his holster, followed by a younger officer holding a digital tablet.
“Mr. and Mrs. Sterling,” Officer Vance nodded to us, then surveyed the chaotic scene: the ruined gender-reveal cake, the stunned crowd of guests, and Brooke standing frozen against the fence with her diaper bag clutched to her chest like a shield. “We received a call regarding a break-in and stolen property. Who is the suspect?”
“Right here, Officer,” Daniel said, pointing directly at Brooke. “Her name is Brooke Miller. She unlawfully entered my locked office during a family gathering, stole proprietary blueprints valued at over half a million dollars, and we have video evidence of her concealing them in that diaper bag.”
“It’s a lie!” Brooke shrieked, tears finally spilling over her mascara. She pointed a trembling finger at me. “They’re framing me! Claire has always been jealous of me because I have a child and she’s just now managing to push one out at forty! She planted those papers in my bag while everyone was looking at the cake!”
“Except, Mrs. Miller,” the younger officer stepped forward, tapping his tablet, “the security camera hard-wired into Mr. Sterling’s office ceiling was streaming to his cloud storage in real-time. We accessed the live feed from our cruiser terminal while driving over. We watched you pick the lock, open the safe with a sequence matching your own birthday, and photograph the documents.”
The entire backyard fell into a dead silence. Even my mother stopped hyperventilating.
Brooke’s arms went limp. The heavy diaper bag slipped from her shoulder and hit the grass with a dull thud. A blue legal envelope slid out from the unzipped pocket, spilling two crisp architectural pages onto the lawn.
Officer Vance crouched, picked up the papers, and glanced at the official corporate seal at the bottom corner. He stood up, clicked his handcuffs off his belt, and looked at Brooke.
“Brooke Miller, you are under arrest for felony burglary, grand larceny, and theft of trade secrets. Turn around and place your hands behind your back.”
“No! Mason, help me! Call my lawyer! Call your father!” Brooke wailed as Officer Vance grabbed her wrists and ratcheted the steel cuffs into place.
Mason stood frozen near the shattered cake, tears streaming down his face as his mother was led out through the side gate toward the flashing cruiser lights. My mother collapsed onto a lawn chair, sobbing quietly into her hands while my father’s relatives whispered among themselves.
Officer Vance paused at the gate and turned to Daniel. “Mr. Sterling, you and your wife will need to come down to the precinct later this evening to sign the formal charges and submit the digital evidence.”

“We’ll be there, Officer. Thank you,” Daniel said.
As the police cruisers pulled away down the street, the sun began to dip below the tree line, casting a warm golden light over the ruined yard. But the true storm was only just beginning.
