Chapter 1 - The Reveal and the Breach

The cake hit the patio before anyone understood it was a joke.

One second, my husband’s family was counting down from three. The next, my sixteen-year-old nephew, Mason, drove both hands into the pink-and-blue cake and shoved it onto the ground while filming himself with his phone.

Frosting splashed across my maternity dress.

My sister, Brooke, laughed so hard she had to grab the gift table.

“Relax, Claire,” she said. “It’s content.”

I was thirty-two weeks pregnant, standing barefoot in my own backyard in Raleigh, North Carolina, while forty guests stared at me. My father’s old silver cake knife lay in the grass. My mother covered her mouth, but she did not tell Brooke to stop. Mason kept narrating for his followers as if my humiliation were a game.

I took his phone.

He reached for it, suddenly less amused. “Give it back.”

“I’m deleting the video.”

The recording began with Mason hiding beside the patio doors, whispering that his mother had promised him five hundred dollars if the clip reached a million views. Then he ran toward the cake.

But just before the impact, the camera swung past the gift table.

Brooke was no longer laughing.

She was crouched behind the presents with my leather document case open on her knees. I watched her remove a blue envelope, photograph two pages, and slide the originals into the diaper bag hanging from her shoulder. Then she closed the case and stood up seconds before Mason destroyed the cake.

My hands went cold.

That case had been locked inside my husband’s home office.

I replayed the three seconds twice. Brooke used a small brass key.

The spare key I kept in my purse.

I sent the video to my husband, Daniel, who had driven to the pharmacy because my blood-pressure prescription had been delayed.

He called ten seconds later.

His voice was so controlled that it frightened me more than shouting would have.

“Claire, do not confront her. Do not let her leave.”

Across the yard, Brooke saw the phone in my hand.

Her smile disappeared.

She grabbed Mason by the arm, lifted the diaper bag from the chair, and started toward the side gate.

I moved in front of her.

“What’s in the blue envelope?” I asked.

Brooke looked past me toward the driveway.
