Three months later, the sun broke through the winter clouds, casting a golden glow over the newly opened Caroline Vale Memorial Pediatric Wing at the city hospital—the very place where our lives had collided in the lobby months before.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony was a quiet, intimate affair. There were no flashing press cameras or corporate grandstanding, just a gathering of doctors, nurses, local families, and close friends.
Sophie stood proudly beside me, holding a pair of oversized ceremonial golden scissors. Her striking blue-gray and amber eyes caught the morning light, shining with bright, youthful excitement.
"Are you ready, sweetie?" I asked, smiling down at her.
"Ready!" Sophie beamed.
Richard stood on her other side, placing a warm hand on her small shoulder. Together, they snipped the crimson ribbon as a gentle wave of applause rose from the gathered crowd.
