Chapter 7 - The Unraveling of Julian Vance

The silence in the boardroom was absolute. You could hear the faint hum of the building's ventilation system and the distant sirens floating up from the street far below.

Julian Vance slowly sank back into his chair, his fingers gripping the edge of the mahogany table so tightly his knuckles turned white. He had built his entire career on intimidation, leveraging corporate bylaws, and exploiting loopholes to consolidate his own power within Vale Development. He had expected me to be intimidated by the wealth, the suits, and the boardroom optics.

He hadn't expected someone who refused to blink.

"An audit," Julian muttered, his voice strained as he tried to regain a shred of composure. "An audit of thirty-five-year-old records would be a public relations disaster for the company, Richard. You know that. It would drag the Vale name through the mud."

Richard straightened up, his eyes fixed coldly on his senior executive. "Then it's a good thing I've already instructed our legal team to begin preparing the transparency reports. The public needs to know the truth. My father's mistakes ended thirty-five years ago. I will not let your petty greed perpetuate them today."

"Richard, wait—let's be rational here," another board member, a woman named Cynthia, intervened nervously. "We don't need a public scandal. Surely an arrangement can be made..."

"An arrangement has already been made," Richard interrupted firmly. "Hannah is a full, legitimate beneficiary of the Vale family trust. Furthermore, effective immediately, a new philanthropic branch focusing on pediatric care and maternal support will be established, bearing Caroline's name—overseen jointly by myself and Hannah."

Julian glared across the table, his face twisted in quiet fury. He knew he had lost. The threat of a public scandal regarding Caroline's banishment decades ago was a nuclear option that would destroy his reputation and career alongside the company's stock value.

"Meeting adjourned," Richard said, his voice ringing with finality.

He turned to me, offering a gentle, proud smile. "Shall we go?"

"Lead the way," I said.

As we walked out of the boardroom and back toward the private elevator, the weight of the corporate empire felt a little less intimidating. We hadn't just claimed our space; we had reshaped its foundation.
